Robocalls Scandal: Bob Rae, Nycole Turmel Maintain Pressure On Tories Over Alleged Dirty Tricks

TORONTO - The opposition politicians were out in force Saturday fanning the flames created by the election robocall scandal, while the Conservatives offered up their own victim of dirty tricks, an MP who won his seat in a landslide.

Peterborough, Ont. MP Dean Del Mastro, who is Prime Minister Stephen Harper's parliamentary secretary, issued a statement Saturday saying his supporters were targeted by deceitful callers in the lead-up to the May election.

"My own campaign in Peterborough was the victim of dirty tricks, with Conservative supporters harassed by late-night abusive calls, and our party condemns these acts," Del Mastro, who trounced his opponents by nearly 15,000 votes, said in a brief statement.

Both NDP leader Nycole Turmel and Liberal leader Bob Rae raised the controversy while campaigning in the upcoming by-election in the riding of Toronto-Danforth. They vowed to keep the heat on the governing Conservatives.

Turmel said the scandal has eroded Canadians' faith in the electoral process and a thorough RCMP probe is necessary to restore credibility in the system.

Rae told reporters the calls won't be a "24-hour wonder" news story that will go away by Monday.

"It would appear from what we're hearing that there's lots more to come and it's very important for everyone to see that we get to the bottom of exactly what happened in the last election," he told a news conference.

Elections Canada and police are looking into reports that automated calls in as many as 18 ridings falsely advised voters that the location of their polling stations had changed. In other instances, voters received harassing late-night or early-morning calls that purported to be from an opposition campaign office.

The Tories said they will provide information regarding the incidents to Elections Canada and urged anyone with knowledge of the calls to "come clean immediately."

The Liberals blamed the growing scandal on Harper, accusing him of fostering a toxic political culture.

"We are entering into a kind of Nixonian moment in our political culture, where all kinds of dirty tricks seem to be possible, all kinds of dirty tricks seem to be encouraged," Rae said _ a reference to tactics used in the early 70s by Republicans under then U.S. President Richard Nixon.

The Conservatives have insisted they ran a "clean and ethical campaign'' _ but the left open the possibility of a rogue operative being involved.

There were various media reports Friday that Conservative staffer Michael Sona resigned in the aftermath of the automated calls controversy, even though there is no public evidence he had any link to the matter. Neither his reported departure _ nor whether there was a connection to the robocall controversy _ could be confirmed.

Both Turmel and Rae said the scheme was too broad and complex to stem from one lone agent.

"We don't believe one person did it alone _ too many ridings are affected by this," Turmel said.

The Liberals are demanding an emergency debate on the issue in the House of Commons on Monday.

Watching today's (Feb 29/2012) Question Period. Tory position is now that "there is no evidence that links Tories" (untrue) and all of this is "a smear campaign by the party that lost". Every Tory that rose to answer sang this song. Also, "why is this coming out now"?

A dangerous position, in my opinion, because if Tories are further linked, (they already are in Guelph) all credibility flies out the window.

Hate to say it, but at this point having the RCMP look into the actions of the Conservatives is like having the wolf protect the chicken coup. In my opinion neither of them have any credibility at this point.

The problem with the robocall thing is that anyone can pull it off so long as there's a list of individuals to be called somewhere that's accessible, don't need anyone at the top to call the shots.

With no direct links to the top (yet) people are only willing to go so far as saying "fostering a toxic political culture." as opposed to "rigging the election" Though the toxic political culture was incubated mostly during the minority government years since there was a lot of pushing back and forth with the opposition with their finger on the election trigger, and the Conservates constantly daring them to pull the trigger.

It seems increasing obvious that majority governments are dangerous to democracies, because they simply snuff out the larger array of opinions and ideas. The Liberal majority as just as guilty of that reality, and is the biggest reason why they are in the state they are in now: On the outside looking in.

We need to shift over to a proportional representation system of democracy, but I don't think we'll get it with any political party in power.

As far as this particular scandal goes, it would be a non-issue if we stopped voting with 19th century methods and started using 21st century technology. Cause think about it: People are using 21st century technology to attempt to thwart a 19th century system of voting. Gee, wonder if that's a bit lopsided?

the RCMP are on the hooks of an ethical dilemma -----they are faced with a major conflict of interest ---
police forces desperatly want bill C10 ----as far as they are concerned harper is santa claus ----equally desperate to make their wishes come true --so much so --that anyone who stands in the way is a supporter of kiddie porn

the only way to avoid this conflict is a public inquiry

The Liberal Party lost the last election because their leader wanted to be PM so bad he could not connect to the people. Also as a federal Liberal, Rae you were not the leader in the last election anyway

Kinda sucks to be Canadian when we have a choice between a leader with great education and international expertise and the smear campaign can make that sound like a liabilty. I would love to know why so many Canadians turned a blind eye to dirty tricks by Harper. clearly cleavery diabolical and scary

I feel the same way.

Canada needs the best and the brightest at the helm even at the best of times, but our system enables the most arrogant and backward to gain and maintain control.

I say: let Elizabeth May, sole member of the Green Party in the House, be Prime Minister for even a single day to see the difference.

The only reasonable punishment would be to void the election result and require a rerun, but I suspect the legal framework to require this is absent.

At least the Harper regime skipped over practicing Gerrymandering. Maybe because Steviemandering just doesn't sound right.

It is never the actual crime that gets you, its the cover up.

And it seems the party in power in Canada is not nearly as good at distancing itself from these crimes as the Nixon administration was.

You guys don't even need a "Deep Throat" for you to know that something is rotten in Guelph and several other riding's.

It's a toss up as to who has the most corrupt election process. The cities of Toronto and Montreal or the provinces of Ontario and Quebec. The feds almost seem more open and transparent then the lower echelons and their blatent insider construction contracts handed to cronies and mafiosi elements. It's not whether they are consetvative or liberal that matters; it's who runs the big cities they come from.

coprruption at any level is wrong and I dont think that there are levels of "wrongness". The mayors impact their city, premiers their province, but the PM gets us all.

You know what really has me wondering... is that the conservatives have had a really long run in Alberta. Harper wants to have that kind of control in Canada... since Harper spent so much time in Alberta did he learn all these tricks there? are the Alberta people being duped and they just dont know?

The Conservatives have all the ethical bearings of the worst of the American political parties, and then some. Harper says he wants to get to the bottom of it. I suggest he look in the mirror. There is something toxic in that party that allows the prior elections in/out actions, Clement misusing funds earmarked for border security, this stuff and more. The Party is morally bankrupt. You can't ask them to do what is right when they cannot distinguish the difference between right and wrong.
THEY SHOULD RESIGN.

You couldn't be more correct sir... and the reason they "have all the ethical bearings of the worst of the American political parties, and then some" is because... they are an American political party.

Well... in the same way the Republicans pretend they are a political party. Harper and his boys have been attending the Koch brother meets down south. They are not representing Canadians AT ALL!

Please tell your friends, tell your parents, tell your children... the Conservatives NEED to be removed and exposed before it's too late.

This hits it on the head. The Harper regime is a "septic tank" (using London slang) regime grafted onto Canada.
