BP Oil Spill: CEO Bob Dudley Says Company Ready For Lengthy Court Battle Over 2010 Gulf Spill

Bp Oil Spill Court Battle

LONDON - BP chief executive Bob Dudley said in an interview published Sunday that the company is ready for a lengthy court battle over the 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Dudley, who took control of BP in October 2010 after former chief executive Tony Hayward resigned amid criticism over the way he had handled the oil spill, told the Sunday Telegraph newspaper that BP can continue to function even if the court case that begins in New Orleans on Monday continues for years.

"We have to remember we are a business that invests in decade-long cycles," he said in an interview published Sunday. "For the vast majority of people now at BP, the company is back on its feet and it is starting to move forward," he said.

BP has set aside $40 billion to deal with fines and associated costs of the April 20, 2010, blowout of BP's deepwater Macondo well which killed 11 workers and injured 17. The burning drilling rig Deepwater Horizon toppled and sank to the Gulf floor, where it sits today.

It took engineers 85 days to permanently cap the well. By then, more than 200 million gallons of oil leaked from the well and had covered much of the northern half of the Gulf of Mexico — endangering fisheries, killing marine life and shutting down offshore oil drilling operations.

President Barack Obama called the BP spill "the worst environmental disaster the nation has ever faced."

Dudley said BP had improved safety standards on its rigs, five of which are working again in the Gulf of Mexico, and that the company was still committed to deepwater drilling.

"We had a choice whether or not to back away from the offshore industry and the deep water industry but we have a lot of great strengths in this area and so, rather than move away, we have gone in with even more commitment, more time and more people, more expertise," he said.

Why have the oil companies not spent more on oil spill clean up technology?

Seems like they have the same lame response they had 30 years ago.

They should be required to fund investments in R&D for clean up technology.

40,000,000,000 billion in finres for 20,000,000 million barrels is 200 dollars per barrel spilled

i think it cost more than that to clean up a barrel --let alone the fisheries damage

It's nice to see that we finally have realised it really was no ones fault just another act of God, heck the economy is actually better now, you may or may not be able to eat any of the seafood but there are alot more jobs associated with checking the food. It's amazing the way a story can be spun to benefit a cleverly desguised marketing campaign, while at the same time obliterates the average persons use of "Common Sense", Hell the way that this is being presented we should just go up and down the coast blowing up oil rigs Win Win, for everyone, we may just need to cut a check to BP for all the benefits that their complete destruction of an ecologically pristine area is really an innovative benefit to the good old US of A.

Why look at BP to blame?

It's the consumers of oil that are responsible for this disaster. That's you and me.

You see many alternatives to getting around? Unless you are close enough to EVERYTHING in your life...such as work, grocery store, family etc then you will at some time have to use fossil fueled transportation.

When you see mass produced, affordable transport that doesn't use fossil fuels then you have a point.

I don't think we really have our priorities right when it comes to environmental concerns. No doubt mankind will destroy itself eventually. It is unfortunate that there has to be so much carnage along this journey.

That's right, BP! Show no responsibility! Responsibility is for l0s3rs!! Responsibility is for 1ibs!! Responsibility is for people who dont give a d@m.n about anything but the bottom line! 'Cause that's free enterprise in action!!

Oh. Wait....

BP. Always ready for court but never ready to protect life or prevent environmental disasters.

let's remember BP is a business that cut corners which killed workers
and
millions of fish and sea birds
and
affected the livelihood of hundreds of thousands of Gulf area residents
and
lied about it
and
is stalling to pay claims

BP should be happy there isn't a crowd of people with pitchforks and torches outside their offices

they'll meet the crowd with pitchforks and torches eventually...because if there is any justice, that's where they're headed.

I am betting both you and your posting friend use petroleum products.

The BP "disaster" finished quite well for what happened. We need to learn from the challenges and move forward.
04:27 PM on 02/26/2012
we need to 'learn' to NOT trust corproations as they lie like rugs

yes, i do use petroleum by products, but think that the oil and gas industry should be nationalized like in Norway so the people benefit instead of rich oligarch oil barons

also, i don't flush my used oil down the sink or other such abuse
