Mitt Romney Vows To 'Get Us That Oil From Canada That We Deserve'

Mitt Romney vowed that Canadian oil will flow into the U.S. if he becomes president in his victory speech in Michigan on Wednesday night.

"I'll get us that oil from Canada that we deserve," Romney said to a crowd of supporters after narrowly beating Rick Santorum in the primary held in the state in which he was born.

Twitter users on both sides of the border reacted to Romney's comments with amusement.

"Canadians, in case you missed it tonight: Romney: "I'll get us that oil from Canada we deserve!" Don't worry, our drones attack swiftly," wroteleft-wing filmmaker Michael Moore on Twitter.

Romney was referring to delays in the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline which would bring oil from Alberta's oil sands to U.S. refineries.

U.S. President Barack Obama blocked the construction of the pipeline in January, after pressure from environmental groups.

The decision was attacked by Republicans, who said the project would generate jobs and decrease America's dependence on Middle Eastern oil.

Last night's speech wasn't the first time Romney mentioned Canadian oil and Keystone. Romney accused the President of pandering to environmentalists when the pipeline was first rejected. "By declaring that the Keystone pipeline is not in the 'national interest,' the president demonstrates a lack of seriousness about bringing down unemployment, restoring economic growth and achieving energy independence," the candidate said.

The oil comments don't mark the first time Canada has made headlines during the Romney campaign. Canada, of course, figures prominently in one of the most stubborn stories about Romney, that of Seamus, the family dog who traveled on a Canadian road trip on top of the Romney family car.

Romney was also recently caught driving around Michigan touting the American auto industry in car that was actually manufactured in Canada.

Okay Mitt. That oil is actually a global commodity. I'd like to see Canada refining it here and shipping it to Europe ourselves.

Considering how dense all the GOP candidates are, it's no surprise to see their front runner making immature and inaccurate commments like this. And someone wants to invade Canada to get it? America's history of success in invading other countries is abysmal and obviously some memories are very short. Too much time wasted watching Bruce Willis fictional movies. Canadian oil is going to China quite clearly - they need it. After all, Bush & Cheney & Corporate America have sent all the manufacturing jobs to China. Obviously, China needs the power.

The Republican party has no long term energy policy other than use more and drill more.

They support the oil companies and do not want to see any alternatives to oil or reduce our consumption. Every time oil prices spike the oil companies love it and they make windfall profits.

It is a shame that the Republican party is a captive of big business and billionaires and cares so little about the American people.

It is time to vote all Republicans out of office.

Wouldn't be the first time the yanks try to invade Canada. We kicked their asses out each time. Last time (1812) we even went down to Washington and burned the white house down. Guess mitt was asleep during history class.

They should build their part of the pipeline and Canada not build the pipeline on their side of the border. We supply most of the USA's oil already so they get their jobs and Canada sells the oil to someone else or keeps and cracks itself. They get the jobs, their environmentalists are happier, we get the oil, lower price at the pump and money

You do not supply most of the US's oil. You supply most of your oil to the US.

I don't mind the Americans fighting our wars for us, 'cause by jove, they are a gun-happy crowd, but to say they are deserving of our resources, without a by your leave, or a dinner invitation, is just un-democratic.

When, exactly, did the US defend Canada against any real threat?

In both World Wars, Canada's commitment per capita was greater than that the of US.

I have no problem giving the US the oil that they deserve.

Yes it will. The US imports 10 units of crude, and 2 units of refined products for the 3 units of refined products it exports. 90% of crude oil that enters the US is burned or used in the US.

Canadian oil, water, trees, power, minerals and any other resource is ours. Unless Mr Harper sells it all, which is a great worry for Canadians.

Instead of talking about what the US deserves and the profits that Corporations will make (which we all know is the greater subject) how about the US focussing on other energy solutions.

Harper has already bent over to make the americans govt and U.S. special interest groups happy in regards to soft wood lumber, and the Canadian wheat board, he'll happily do whatever his puppet masters in the U.S. want him to do.

That confirms my impressions about Republicans and right-wing Americans in general. They believe that cheap energy and cheap oil is their birthright as Americans, part of what makes the US "exceptional".

This is an entitled mentality at its worse. It's the reason right-wingers don't want environmental protections or action against global warming, because they feel it will increase the cost of energy and deprive them of what they "deserve" by virtue of being American. Even if the increase is justified because it merely represents the real cost of that energy.

They are dreaming if they thinking building Keystone will do anything to decrease oil prices in the U.S. Oil prices are determined by the world commodity trading.

I heard him the other day on the news and I just shook my head once more. The war on drugs just hasn't produced the desired effect, the problem goes all the way to the top. Either that or Monsanto's genetically modified humans don't seem to have the bugs worked out yet.

We should export the oil to China instead.

first off, China already owns 25% of the tar sands in Canada.
next, oil products are now the #1 export of the United States.

But where is that oil coming from? The US has about 2% of the world's known oil reserves and US consumption is high enough to blow through the US supply in about 3 or 4 years.

Shut up Michael Moore.
I thought Mitt sounded like an idiot, but that "joke" was just pathetic.

Just try denying the US something they think they deserve. We would ssom be attacked by the politicians as a fundamentalist state, with leaders who imprison and torture the citizens. Heck, in reality there is already plenty of Canada bashing going on. And the drones would NOT be far behind. Moores joke should elicit nervous laughter at best.
