The Calgary Flames got off to a flying start against the Winnipeg Jets then had to hang tight for a wild 5-3 win on Friday night.

The road-weary Jets fell behind 3-0 in the opening period, but chipped away, outshooting the Flames 16-4 in the third period and 45-27 overall, but Calgary netminder Miikka Kiprusoff and his sharp glove hand kept them at bay.

Alex Tanguay had a goal and three assists for the Flames and linemate Jarome Iginla had a goal and two assists as the Flames crept within one point of the San Jose Sharks for the final berth in the Western Conference playoff race.

Olli Jokinen had three assists for the Flames.

Evander Kane, Blake Wheeler and Tobias Enstrom scored for the Jets, who remain tied for eighth in the East with the Washington Capitals with 72 points. The Capitals have two games in hand.

More to come.
