Snowmobiler killed, 5 injured in B.C. avalanches

A snowmobiler has been killed and five others have been injured after separate avalanches in B.C.'s backcountry Friday.

The snowmobiler succumbed to his injuries and two others were injured after an avalanche Friday afternoon near Fernie, B.C., about 200 kilometres southwest of Calgary, sources tell CBC News.

The extent of the injuries is not known.

Another slide about 30 kilometres north, near Sparwood, B.C., has injured three snowmobilers. None of the three is believed to have been seriously hurt.

No other details were available.

A 44-year-old Squamish man died when he was caught in an avalanche south of Whistler Tuesday.

The Canadian Avalanche Centre issued a warning earlier Friday for parts of B.C. this weekend, saying slopes that would normally be considered safe were now more prone to avalanches.
