WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Obama administration is for the first time citing Vatican City as a potential hub for money laundering.

The State Department's annual International Narcotics Control Strategy Report released Wednesday identifies the Holy See as one of 68 countries or jurisdictions "of concern" for money laundering or other financial crimes. Officials said the Vatican is on the list because it isn't clear whether a year-old anti-money laundering regime is effective.

The report, which places Belgium, Ireland, Portugal and South Korea on the same list, identifies countries that may be vulnerable to money laundering. It looks at national laws to fight financial crime, their enforcement and the size of the banking sector. Major economies, including the U.S., Britain and Japan, are identified as countries of primary concern for money laundering.

this would be one of the lesser crimes they are committing.

You apparently didn't read the article. It states the study "identifies countries that MAY BE VULNERABLE to money laundering. And in another part of the article it uses the work "potential". Either read the story in it entirety or just keep you prejudices to yourself.

and i said this 'would' be one of the lesser crimes they are committing. 'would', because they are allegations. but what is inarguable is that they have, and continue to perpetrate much more grievous crimes. thats not prejuduce, its truth.

If the Vatican has drug money, maybe they can stop passing the basket around at church?

No charges, no evidence, no court case, no jury but the government will try to drag down its opponents by Profiling them, just like they do to their own citizens. As if we need to worry about this nonissue as compared to the corruption, pork belly projects, bridges to nowhere projects, and insider tradring of our own government.

This is just the result of a few people actually doing their jobs, and you have a problem with that?

Money speaks louder than words. No one or entity is immune. Face it, the Vatican isn't any better or holier than many of the other countries accused of money laundering. It is pervasive and won't diminish even if these places accused now stop it. "For the love of money is the root of all evil" and no one is immune. Greed like prostitution is the oldest of values and occupations.

Seriously, the Vatican used for money-landering? What will the US think of next? They are obvious desperate for something major.
11:07 AM on 03/09/2012
Yes seriously, who would think the Vatican is capable of doing anything unlawful - the child abuse scandals and cover up accusations are also, quite lame. Shame on the US?
