Even with makeup artists at their service, celebrities are often victims of some regrettable makeup choices. Learn from their mistakes and make sure these same unfortunate looks don’t happen to you.

Over-Powdered

Drew Barrymore looks more ready for auditioning for the role of a vampire in Twilight than for the red carpet with her powdery face. Being photographed in HD with bright spotlights shining on her face only further highlights this makeup disaster. Same goes for Nicole Kidman and her powdery face at the premiere of Nine.

Makeup Fix

Translucent powder is fantastic for setting your makeup to help give your skin a flawless finish and keep oil at bay, so you don’t want to skip this step. But use it in moderation—a light dusting is all you need. Plus, avoid powdering your face throughout the day or it’ll only get cakey as the day progresses. To keep oil under control, use a blotting paper in your T-zone.

Ill-chosen Concealer

Eva Longoria often wears too much makeup, but her major misstep here? Her choice of under-eye concealer. It’s too light and too obvious – defeating the whole purpose of concealer.

Makeup Fix

When choosing a concealer, look for one as close to your current skin tone as possible (this means you may need a different shade in the summer, when your skin is tan, than in the winter). Look for a creamy consistency with high pigment (so you can get good coverage while using just a little bit of product) and to apply, dot on and blend, blend, blend.

Bad Blush

Lindsay Lohan may have been in court and taken into custody for probation violation but she also should’ve been found guilty of bad blush. The dark brown hue applied to her pale skin in an angry slash on each cheek made the tired looking actress look even more haggard.

Makeup Fix

To contour your cheeks to help slim your face, use a shade that’s only one or two shades darker than your skin and using a fluffy brush, sweep a dusting of it into the hollows of your cheeks (suck in your cheeks to figure out where these hollows are). Add a pink blush applied to the apples of your cheeks to add a youthful, freshness to the look.

Colour Overload

Jennifer Lopez usually gets it right when it comes to makeup, but this episode of American Idol had us wondering “What was she thinking?” Pastel green eyeshadow, paired with bright pink cheeks and frosty pink lips made for a frothy, overdone face in way too many Easter egg-inspired shades, especially when combined with her shiny sequined top.

Makeup Fix

Restrain yourself when it comes to shades and finishes and play up only one or two features. Green eye shadow is a fun and more daring look you can experiment with, just tone it down when choosing your lipstick and cheek colour, or vice versa–doll-like cheeks in a bolder hue can look gorgeous, just tone down the other elements you wear.

Too Much Bronzer

Bronzer can be tricky – as evidenced by the mishaps Leighton Meester, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Kim Kardashian have had with the faux-glow product; all three have been guilty of applying it with a heavy hand.

Makeup Fix

Use bronzer in moderation and find a shade as close to what your skin naturally looks like when it’s sunkissed and slightly golden. Avoid anything that skews toward orange and with too much shimmer, which can look unnatural and will highlight imperfections in your skin.
