Never in our wildest dreams did we envision seeing a) Stella McCartney and Penélope Cruz and b) PETA at Toronto Fashion Week.

But that's reportedly what's set to happen as the tents at David Pecaut Square open up for North America's second largest week showcasing fashion and beauty trends. And, OK, so the starlets won't be showing up in in person, but they will leave a long-distance mark.
Update: PETA protesters had a presence outside the tents on opening night, and are set to continue their campaign throughout the week.

As models, designers and buyers arrive at the shows, they will reportedly be greeted by a very graphic looped video featuring clothing designer McCartney. The video is PETA's (People for the Ethical Treatment Of Animals) new "exposé of the leather industry" and features some images of the way animals may be treated when used for fashionable purposes.

Quick Poll

Would you give up wearing leather?

In between flashes of animals being skinned and slaughtered, McCartney discusses her choice of fabrics in her fashion, stating she avoids all animal skins. She also makes a plea to fashion lovers: "Please join me in exploring the huge variety of fashionable shoes, belts, purses and wallets that aren't the product of a cow's violent death."

PETA reps will also be on hand passing out leaflets featuring actress Penelope Cruz and the slogan "Give Fur the Cold Shoulder."

The organization has long been known for some of its daring and graphic ads -- and the way they approach fashionistas at shows (they've, in the past, doused attendees wearing fur in red paint). Reps on-site say the video and leaflets will be sent to any designers who -- during Toronto Fashion Week -- use leather or fur in their collections.

Which got us thinking, are you a fan or foe of fur? Let us know below.

Bull. nobody is skinning animals alive. They are being melodramatic. Is it better to hit a fish over the head or wring a chicken's neck than to cut an animal's throat? I don't think so. I am 100% aware that the meat I eat had to be killed in order to be on my plate. I am ok with thet. thank's for the info, though

I always forget that Paul McCartney's daughter is a fashion designer.

I am really grateful to Stella for speaking out. Sadly, that still takes guts in this day and age where industry persists in making the suffering of animals "standard practice" because it is profitable... even though there are alternatives! Thank you Stella for your compassion and for helping change things for animals and for people too. Whatever one's lifestyle - whether you buy expensive fashion or not (I don't/can't) - we need to work to stop the horrific torturing and murdering of animals by the billions. It is so unnecessary, and it is not a sign of an enlightened society. Nor does it make one beautiful, to wear the skins of such gentle harmless animals. There are Farm Animal Sanctuaries (like www.woodstocksanctuary.org) near many large cities now so you can learn more, visit and meet the sweet and innocent beings themselves, to get a better sense of who is being killed and maybe be inspired to choose the cruelty free alternatives. Millions of roosters are being gassed right now for the stupid feather-hair-accessory craze. It is just unnecessary. THANK YOU STELLA!

I'd like to watch the video, since I like Stella, and LOVE Penelope. But I can't watch cruelty to animals.

Cruetly to people, I can handle -- I'm a big boxing fan, for instance. But animals? I just can't do it.

more propoganda....so she doesn't use skins...she uses her talents to make objects that are unnafordable for most people and or impossible to wear because they are cut for size 0 to 8....as if that isn't it's own form of abuse.

My hopes are that one day we will have the enlightenment to created laws that emancipate and protect other species of our planet...

right now, we can't even emancipate and protect our own species...

"According to a 2010 report by the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, of the 4,569 pets received by PETA that year, 3,630 were euthanized. In 2011, out of 2,050 pets PETA received that year, 1,965 were euthanized."

I'm not a vegan. And there are plenty of people who aren't vegan. That being said, until the entire world becomes vegan, cows and other animals that we eat for meat will die for this purpose. There's a source of leather. I don't wear leather, I personally think it's weird, but whatever. I also abhor the idea of fur - however - we don't eat the animals they make fur clothing articles out of, and they do farm those animals for the purpose of making fur things....I see a difference. Just an opinion, no need to freak out.

There is absolutely no excuse for wearing real fur unless you are a psychopath. Leather is obviously a bit harder to do without because of its ubiquity and low cost. Start by not buying anything new that's made of it. Like fur, there are many items now available that cannot be distinguished from the real thing.

I am a huge animal lover and I donate to many organizations. But I think PETA has just become awful. I get the whole "I would rather go naked that wear fur" thing...but I would rather look at pictures of beautiful animals then a bunch of naked people. And the fact they are making a PORN site....disgusts me. I mean...really?! Then they wanted people to drink human breast milk other than cow milk... it is just gross. I like Sea Shepherd, WWF, and a bunch of other organizations much more. I respect what PETA is doing for sure, I just don't like the way they do it anymore.

what about all the toxic colored dyes from the fabric materials going into our water systems?
