Cyclist struck by unmarked OPP car in Orillia

An unmarked police car struck an 85-year-old cyclist in Orillia, Ont., sending him to hospital with serious injuries Tuesday.

A 46-year-old Ontario Provincial Police officer was traveling westbound in an unmarked OPP cruiser on Atherley Road in Orillia when it collided with a cyclist shortly after 4:40 p.m.

The elderly male cyclist was transported by ambulance to Orillia Soldiers' Memorial Hospital before being airlifted to Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto.

The OPP officer was also taken by ambulance to the same Orillia hospital where he has been treated and released.

Ontario's Special Investigations Unit has been notified.
