TORONTO - A funeral will be held March 24 for Mariam Makhniashvili, the teenager who disappeared outside her high school 2 1/2 years ago and whose body was found last week.

A lawyer for the family confirmed the date and says it's likely her father will be able to attend.

Vakhtang Makhniashvili is serving a six-year prison term after pleading guilty last year to three counts of aggravated assault after two separate stabbing incidents, one involving a neighbour and the other a couple who had posted his bail.

Police said last Friday that human remains found in a wooded area in north Toronto belonged to Makhniashvili, 17, and that the cause of death was likely a fall from a nearby highway overpass.

They do not believe it was a homicide.

The Makhniashvili family, originally from the Republic of Georgia, had only been in Toronto for three months when their daughter disappeared in 2009.
