Antibiotics Linked To Asthma In Mouse Study

A new study conducted on mice suggests that antibiotics taken in childhood could play a part in the development and severity of allergic asthma.

The study published Friday in the journal EMBO reports that antibiotics may damage bacteria that live in the gut, disturbing the bacterial community and possibly causing a more severe form of asthma.

The study’s lead authors, researchers at the University of British Columbia’s department of microbiology, tested the effects of antibiotics streptomycin and vancomycin on newborn and adult mice. While streptomycin didn’t seem to have a significant effect, the young mice had altered intestinal flora and developed severe cases of asthma when given vancomycin. The older mice appeared to be unaffected.

The researchers theorize that infancy and childhood are periods in which humans develop a healthy immune system. If this process is disturbed and healthy bacteria are disturbed in the intestinal tract, the immune system may not work as efficiently, opening the door to diseases like asthma.

In developed countries, children are prescribed antibiotics, which kill both bad and good bacteria, much more frequently than those in less developed ones. And the rate of asthma in developed countries is increasing, say the authors.

"It has long been suspected that kids exposed to more antibiotics — like those in developed countries — are more prone to allergic asthma," said UBC microbiologist Brett Finlay in a release. "The gut-lung connection is also consistent with observations that incidence of asthma has not increased significantly in developing countries where antibiotic use is less prevalent — and in turn, the gut flora is permitted to fully develop."

Allergic asthma is a chronic and inflammatory condition that causes hypersensitivity of the airways, increased production of phlegm, wheezing and breathing problems. It affects an estimated 12 per cent of children and eight per cent of adults in Canada.

The study was funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research in partnership with Genome British Columbia and the Allergy, Genes and Environment Network.

My daughter has allergic asthma and was on antibiotics for the first three months of her life due to only being born with one functioning kidney. It makes sense as she is the only one in the family with asthma. She's 14 and still suffers from what I like to call seasonal asthma.

Lets see, I have asthma, my ex has asthma, my mom and his mom had asthma so our daughter got asthma from antibiotics? She has asthma and was diagnosed with it at 9 months old and had never been on antibiotics. She has sever food allergies, her worst was to milk so we had to take her off her formula and put her on a soy formula. While it may play a part it kids getting asthma with no family history of asthma but I would doubt its the only cause of asthma. As I said its not like my daughter could have prevented getting asthma with the strong family history of it.

Consider this dude: Your whole f'n family has problems breathing, did you ever consider maybe it's your AIR QUALITY? Check for moulds in your environment. Check my above post for why antibiotics will cause asthma.

I work in a daycare center, and it's scary how the parents seem to run to the doctor for every ailment, their child has. Also, they dutifully will spray and inject every chemical substance the doctor suggests...eg: vaccines of all types, antibiotics, flu sprays up the nose. I want to shake them and wake them up! These things are not proven safe or effective, but thanks to Big Pharma in control, these practices will get worse. Parents need to stop giving up control of the health of their kids.

Watch out in daycare - my daughter works in one - NO LYSOL SPRAY - toxic and dangerous - when they stopped using it - KIDS GOT BETTER - amazing - I was there -watched them spray-saw kids rub face/eyes/sneeze - told them to stop - after 1 week - health and skin changes - JUST READ THE BACK -look up the ingredients - what a danger to kidsl

So true. The cleaners are terribly toxic. And you have the employees who use so much of them, and see nothing wrong with causing toxic fumes for all the kids to breath. There is no common sense anymore. If I say something, I will be seen as someone who won't follow policy.

EMBO? If that is a journal, it certainly isn't one anyone reads. University of British Columbia? More junk science.

I was very recently diagnosed with allergic asthma. I've also suffered GERD for over 15 years. Along with having allergies, the allergist is certain that reflux is a huge contributor to my asthma. There is no asthma in my family except me so that's been a puzzler. I'm sure I took lots of antibiotics as a child. They used to hand them out like candy. It's a very interesting correlation they are looking at.

jrkeiffer1226 - I suffer with allergic asthma, also - for about 20 years and it's getting worse - now, I have a chronic cough to go with it. Like you, I have GERD, as well - suffered with it since 1974. When my GERD 'acts up', I always have asthma. Also, like you, I was given tons of antibiotics as a child. Not only did I make a prior correlation between my GERD 'episodes' and my asthma attacks, but, now, I think it's way beyond interesting to read the same correlation in the article and read your comment that you suffer the same as I do with the same things. It makes me wonder how many more people like you and I are out there and how many of us took a lot of antibiotics over our lifetime that may have set us up for what we suffer with now...Very, very interesting indeed! This needs a lot more research in my book! I do hope you can stay healthy, jrkeiffer1226! Take care.

Your problem is an over-acidic lifestyle. If you ever did go on anti-biotics, they are sure to cause what is known as systemic candidiasis, or an overgrowth of candida yeasts in the body. This WILL cause GERD, heartburn, leaky gut, malabsorbtion, and a host of other diseases. They secret over 100 mycotoxins which wreak havoc on your hormones and overall body.

Eat low carbs/sugars, higher alkalizing foods, and rotate antifungals. Take probiotics to replenish your immunity. Stick with it and I guarantee you to feel better.

Antibiotics has also been linked in a study to autism as well, finding that in extreme cases virtually all the good gut bacteria is wiped out save for a resistance set which produces neuro toxins. With all it's competition destroyed the neuro toxin producing bacteria end up taking over the system and mentally impairing the vulnerable development stages of a child.

Our obsession with ultra sterile environments may ironically be causing the early deaths of people.

Getting perspective on any issue requires a little bit of digging. Simple fact of the matter is that autism is a first world nation disease. No third world countries suffer from high rates of autism or digestive tract diseases for that matter. These problems have been linked to unhealthy populations of gut bacteria. Hence one of the reasons why probiotics has been a growing part of the food consumption dialogue: To promote higher populations of 'good' populations.

Though if it's easier for you to consider everything one bit fat lie, that's your prerogative really; it's not like I'm going to convince you anyways.
