Pat Martin: Twitter Goes Crazy After NDP MP Gets Profane, Again

Pat Martin Erases 'F**k You' Tweet, Goes With 'Pompous Dickhead'
CP

The outspoken NDP MP took to the social network Friday evening and, inspired by an Andrew Coyne column on how Canada is poised to become the freest-trading nation on earth, launched a series of anti-globalization posts.

Pat Martin sparring with Andrew Coyne on Twitter about free trade is hardly worth a headline -- it's a weekly feature -- but then the NDP firebrand's infamous temper started heating up.

After tweeting that globalization "has been a destructive nightmare for working people," Laval University economist Stephen Gordon responded, "Someday the NDP will realise that know-nothing populism is incompatible with social democracy. Yes, I'm talking to you, @PatMartinMP."

Pat Martin didn't like that. Not one bit.

"@stephenfgordon the good new is I wrote "F**k You Stephen Gordon' then erased it. But I reserve the right to call you a pompous dickhead."

Predictably, Twitter went crazy.

Martin admitted he didn't know who Gordon is (he's widely quoted in the Canadian media), which set off a string of rebukes. Before long, iPolitics posted a story on the rant, which was tweeted by political trendsetter National Newswatch.

This isn't the first time Martin has got himself into trouble on Twitter. Last year, the MP dropped several F-bombs on the social network after the Conservative government voted to end debate on a budget-related bill. Some said it was the final bullet for any hope of parliamentary decorum.

Martin hasn't said sorry to Gordon yet, but that doesn't mean he won't. Earlier this week, the MP issued a written apology to the Tory voter-outreach company Responsive Marketing Group over comments he made linking the firm to the robocalls scandal. Martin is also being sued by RackNine Inc., the Edmonton telemarketing firm used by the now infamous Pierre Poutine to make misleading robocalls in at least one riding.

Love him or hate him, you have to admit he's keeping the House of Commons interesting.
