Registered dietitian Carol Harrison says it's important to consume some protein at each meal and animals are a rich source.

To get the same amount of protein as one 75-gram (2 1/2-oz) serving of trimmed, cooked beef (170 calories) you'd need to eat:

— 91 almonds (680 calories)

— More than 375 ml (1 1/2 cups) chickpeas (477 calories)

— 90 ml (6 tbsp) peanut butter (588 calories)

— More than 1 litre (4 cups) cooked quinoa (792 calories)
