Man charged in Kahnawake homicide

A 31-year-old man from Kahnawake, Que., was charged Tuesday in connection with a murder in the Mohawk community.

Provincial police said Derek Beauvais was charged with first-degree murder at the courthouse in Longueuil, Que. Tuesday afternoon.

He was charged after the body of a 56-year-old man was found at around 10 p.m. Monday night in a parking lot near Highway 207 in Kahnawake.

Provincial police and Mohawk Peacekeepers in Kahnawake spoke to several witnesses early Tuesday morning and police arrested Beauvais shortly after.

Both forces are continuing to investigating the homicide.

Sureté du Québec spokesperson Martine Asselin said both men were known to police.

"What we know is that these two persons knew each other and it's probably an argument between the two that had a bad ending," said Asselin.

Highway 207 was closed between Highways 138 and 30 for the police investigation.
