TORONTO - NDP leadership candidate Thomas Mulcair wants the party to create a $3.38-million fund to take on the Conservatives in the next election.

The number of seats in Parliament will increase to 338 for the 2015 vote, and Mulcair says the New Democrats need resources in each riding to defeat the Tories and form the next government.

He says the fund should be a key element of the NDP's plans to prepare for the next election and will help spread the so-called orange wave right across the country.

Mulcair says the party should start a campaign next Monday to define Prime Minister Stephen Harper and what he's doing wrong, knowing the Tories will do the same to the new NDP leader.

The front-running Mulcair picked up endorsements today from two more Ontario New Democrat members of provincial parliament, veteran Michael Prue and rookie Teresa Armstrong.

Mulcair will face off against six other candidates at a convention in Toronto on Saturday, but party members are already casting votes and can continue to do so from home during the balloting.

Advise to NDP. You need more than just funds, but more top notch candidates. The last election was a good start and I voted NDP, but this time I want to see some more experienced people running... not just an undergraduate political science student like what happened in my riding.

"Mulcair says the party should start a campaign next Monday to define Prime Minister Stephen Harper and what he's doing wrong"

Kind of like what Bob Rae is doing right now with no funds? The NDP need to start behaving like the official opposition if they hope to garner support.

He probably hopes to get the money from the same pro-Israel sources backing his campaign, but once he's in and the NDP opposition is neutered as a result, the pro-Israeli money will return to its natural home, the Harper regime which is fully on board with pro-Israel pro US imperialism in the middle east.

If Mulcair wins, I'll be signing up for a monthly donation. Time to show we care enough to put our money where our convictions are.

Shouldn't we do that regardless of who wins? This current government needs to go ASAP.

I think Mulcair is probably the right choice for the NDP and he's probably correct in his assessment of the situation. I think the NDP is going to have a hard time raising that kind of cash though.

I suspect that amount of advertising dollars pales in comparrison to what the Conservatives spend (of course not all of it is accounted for with Elections Canada) and what their "super packish" groups like Tax Payers will spend throughtout the next 3 years to support any and all tory positions. (yes, I know once in a while they will oppose a tory idea - just to make it look fair).

Especially since the Conservatives use federal government 'announcements' and promotion of their policies on TV more than I've ever seen. And for free - to them, aka paid for mostly by the taxpayers they don't support.
