Gas station fire triggers evacuation in Chilliwack, B.C.

A major fire engulfed an Esso gas station in the Chilliwack community of Yarrow, east of Vancouver, triggering an emergency evacuation of the area.

Fire officials say workers inside an autobody shop were cutting a metal tank when a fire started, engulfing the building and the Esso gas station next door.

One worker suffered burns, but managed to drive himself to hospital.

Police evacuated homes and businesses within a one-kilometre radius of the station at 42170 Yarrow Road while several fire crews put out the blaze.

Witnesses reported the fire was out 12:30 p.m. PT, but the building was destroyed.

BC Hydro reported 1,800 customers in the area lost power because of the fire.

Yarrow is a small rural community that is part of the City of Chilliwack.
