Rick Mercer Rant Robocalls
Rick Mercer calls for action from the Governor General in his latest robocalls rant. (YouTube)

Rick Mercer has delivered another robocalls rant and this time he wants action.

The host of the "Rick Mercer Report" is calling for the Governor General to appoint a Royal Commission to investigate the widening election scandal.

Mercer says there is no hope of the cabinet calling a judicial inquiry to investigate their own party, because "That's like asking Don Cherry to donate his brain to science. It's not going to happen."

While Mercer says listening to the PM's parliamentary secretary Dean Del Mastro play the blame game makes him want to punch himself in the face, it's the prospect of all the people who believe voting is useless being proved right that really scares him.

So far, the only investigation into the fraudulent election robocalls is from Elections Canada. And results from that probe aren't expected any time soon.

Media attention is already slowing down, but action from the GG would undoubtedly bring the story back to the top of the national debate. Your move David Johnston.

I wonder if Mr. Mercer is going to have as much as a passionate rant bout NDP allegations of Election fraud in Scarborough by Tamil Tigers as he has for Robocalls?

Yes that would be an, appropriate move.

This was why DJ was put in as Governor General by Harper to begin with. With his man in office King Con can do whatever he wants, including running this country into the ground.

Sorry if this double posts:

Most of the commenters are treating this like a party issue, they are saying "it's time we take down the Conservatives", or "We don't need an investigation, you Lib/NDP people just want our seats". Personally, I believe in an old rule called "Innocent until proven guilty". I don't know if it's the Conservatives who made the calls, Liberals, or NDP... or if it was some independent group who wanted to promote their ideas through the Conservative party.

I just want an investigation so that justice can be carried out against the people who manipulated our election system. I don't care if that investigation comes back and reviles that it was my party that made the calls... because if that's the case we deserve to be punished for it. There should be no "fall guys" the person who was responsible and all the people around them who knew must be charged for their crimes.

Furthermore, it's clear that the elections were not fairly carried out. It doesn't matter who mislead the voters, there were a significant number of voters who were suppressed and that means that a bi-election should be called in each of those riding. If the Conservatives were not responsible for the voter abuse and they won fair and square then a new election will have no affect and they should not be nervous.

This isn't a party issue, this is a Canadian issue.

The finger at the moment is pointing squarely at the Cons who are running this country with free rein.. " Innocent until proven guilty" should not apply unless there is a moratorium on the Harper government preventing them from further governing until a Public Inquiry clears them of wrong doing.

The notion of having bi-elections is not fair to Conservative voters as they had no prior knowledge the party was attempting to rig the vote. If they had known Canadian democracy was about to be hijacked, many would not have voted Conservative. We need a new election.

This isn't a party issue .. it's a democracy issue.

I love Rick's rants. He doesn't mince words and usually makes an intelligent arguement without making rude comments (not pointing anyone out).

Good rant Rick but it looks like we aren't going to get to the bottom of this. Someone knows who is behind it but no one's talking.

Good luck with that. The Governor General, before he was appointed GG, is the guy that prevented the inquiry into Brian Mulroney from asking any questions about the Airbus affair. Stephen Harper famously said of our GG's job in limiting this crime investigation, "Whatever we paid him for this, it wasn't enough". Then, surprise surprise, Harper himself paid him not long after with the Governor Generalship. So, unfortunately, it's rather unlikely he'll call for an investigation into the Conservatives.

Using illegal actions to try & influence voting & or win seats in an election should be viewed as seditious behavior.

We need only to look at a 'Majority' Gov't hobbled together by less than 7000 votes to see what election tampering could possibly do, or the influence it might have an a Country's domestic & Foreign Policy initiatives.
A fraudulent election or an attempt at such an event is a crime against the state.

Who ever operated this RoBo-call Scam is guilty of sedious behavior for they would of had to encourage fellow citizens to plot against their own Country & & it's democratic principals for their self interest. Of this there can be no mistake & therefore no reason for not following thru with prosecution if & when those responsible are caught.

For God's sake not that rant again. It was old and tired last time and even more so this time. If only he had some humour in his blood.

Stick to TV because politics is not your forte.

Too bad so many people don't feel the same way. A of us love his rants. Interestingly enough this is part of his tv, and his tv is about politics for the most part.

I though Cherry already donated it to science, that why he function the way he does, brain dead. The big question is how honorable GG David Johnston is? Do not forget he was ask to be GG by Harper.

Excellent rant! If voters decide that voting is useless and those wishing to suppress the vote get their wish, who would benefit - the Conservatives. Why, because they do not do well at the polls with higher turnouts. Truly the perfect crime.
09:42 PM on 03/21/2012
So I'm curious bolshevik brethren, where is your evidence the Conservatives had anything to do with these calls, (and by proof, I mean actual CREDIBLE documentation/recordings/witnesses, not just random opinions, heresay or Bob Rae's blundering rants, since I realise the definition of prood is something your type seems to struggle with so very much). Unless you and your loony, leftist lot can provide any real hard proof that our PM or any members of his government had any involvement in this affair, I'm afraid to say that you're only spreading more lies and slander to suit your own agendas.

The records used to identify the non-Conservative voters who were targeted could only be accessed by permission from a Conservative staffer. The only 'loonies' here are the ones who think that anyone but a Conservative would be behind this voter suppression, they even TEACH voter suppression to those in their ranks.

Well Isn't the point of a royal inquiry to find proof or culpability? Why don't you stop seeing this through such a party biased lens. What if it is discovered that the Liberals were and NDP were up to no good, will you still be all mad and huffy?

If a party, ANY PARTY was acting illegally to influence an election result we as Canadians have a right to know. Harper promised an accountable and transparent government, I'd like to see him deliver.
