Toronto subway riders should prepare themselves for a weekend of frustration, as the TTC is set to shut down a large part of the subway system until Monday morning.

In order to construct a new double crossover section at the King station the TTC is closing the subway from Yonge and Bloor all the way to Union station.

The closure will start at midnight Friday and the line won't reopen until 6 a.m. on Monday.

The TTC says the crossover, when it is finished, will allow trains to terminate at King station in the event of an emergency.

This weekend's closure is the first of three closures that are need to finish the construction.

"Two additional weekend closures will occur over the next several months. Once those dates are confirmed, the TTC will inform customers and the public," it said in a news release.

Over the weekend all trains on University-Spadina section will terminate at Union station.

On the Yonge street portion of the line, trains will terminate at Bloor Street.

Shuttle buses will be put into service to replace the trains.
