Elections Canada Chief To Brief MPs On Robocalls Thursday

Marc Mayrand Robocalls Budget

First Posted: 03/26/2012 5:27 pm Updated: 03/27/2012 4:25 pm

Canadians may get more information on the fraudulent robocalls controversy as the head of Elections Canada appears before MPs later this week.

Chief Electoral Officer Marc Mayrand will appear before the procedure and House affairs committee Thursday morning after putting out a statement asking for the chance to update MPs about the ongoing investigation in Guelph, Ont. coming out of the May 2, 2011 election.

A notice for the committee meeting says the subject is "allegations of wrongdoing" during the 41st general election.

Mayrand's appearance, the timing of which was decided by the committee's Conservative chairman Joe Preston, comes at a time when many reporters will be "locked up" in the annual federal budget briefing, without access to the internet, and on a day when a lot of the public's attention will be on the budget.

Elections Canada has spent almost a year piecing together evidence in an attempt to track the source of fraudulent phone calls, claiming to be on behalf of the election agency, that directed voters in Guelph to the wrong polling station.

Reports of similar calls, both automated and live, have since surfaced in other ridings.

But the agency has answered few questions, citing the investigation, leaving many hungry for more information.

In the March 15 statement, in which Mayrand asked for the chance to update MPs, he urged Canadians not to jump to conclusions.

"Like all law enforcement bodies, the office of the commissioner generally does not disclose information on its investigative activities in order to protect the presumption of innocence and privacy," he said.

"In this regard, I advise caution about drawing conclusions based on possibly inaccurate and incomplete information."

The Jedi Mind Tricks are made by the media.

We have no idea who made these calls, the assumption is that they are from the Conservatives is the biggest mind trick of them all.

There were zillions of elections complaints, this one was singled out.

The Cons have lost 5% in the polls due to this entirely fake scandal.

Even if the Cons or Libs are entirely vindicated, the damage will have been done.

The maid that claimed DSK raped her was shown by her own team - the prosecution - to be lying through her teeth - nonetheless, DSK's career has been ruined by the woman who cried wolf.

Respectable journalism would follow the case with diligence to find the real outcome.

Unfortunately, respectable journalism does not exist in this country, certainly not on this blog.

Honestly, Canada's democracy is being threatened in in front of your eyes and we keep turning the head to the other side...

1-Bill C-19 (long-gun registry bill)

2-Bill C-30 (online surveillance bill)

3-Bill C-33 (Air Canada back-to-work bill)

What is next ????

It's time to wake up

Can't they read.

Where your headline crew got the Jedi allusion from in this bit of news is somewhat mysterious. But anyone knows the Tories are the Dark Side of the Force. They're Sith, not Jedi.

Only Siths deal in absolutes..hence the crime bill.

The fact that a CON chose to have this (EC update) happen on the day of the budget release does lead me to the conclusion that they guilty are hiding behind anything they can find.
Anyone else notice the rise of corruption in Canada since the CONS have risen to power once again?

Come on HP. This story broke last week.
12:34 PM on 03/27/2012
This makes no sense to me at all. The Conservatives want people to believe they had nothing to do with this, they knew nothing, and they are innocent. Since the news of the robocalls first came out, people have been calling for an investigation into what really happened...so you would think holding such an investigation that the people want is a good thing. A positive announcement for Conservatives to make.

Instead they bury the investigation as much as they possibly can in hopes of having an inquiry without anyone knowing about it? What are we supposed to take from such a blatant attempt to hide the truth from the people? If the conservatives are as innocent as they claim, and knew nothing about this as they claim, why are they acting like criminals trying to cover up their behaviour?

Seems like the ideal way to passing laws too. Mention it, secretly vote without discussing it with the citizens, and pass it.

I wonder if the new crime bill would go after them too?

Here's what Canada's MPs spend their time doing while "working" in Ottawa:

http://viableopposition.blogspot.ca/2012/03/canadas-ndp-mps-and-their-hair.html
12:58 PM on 03/27/2012
This is pathetic, and a clearly partisan attempt to smear NDP MPs for fixing their hair in the commons. This is one of the saddest attempts I have ever seen, I regret ever selecting the link.

Besides, I'd rather have an MP taking 1 min to fix his or her hair then completely falling asleep altogether...

What ever information Mr Mayrard releases on budget day will continue to exist, days and weeks after the budget comes down.
Maybe it will completly exonerate the tories.
Maybe not.
Real cliff-hanger stuff.

not sure about other Canadians, but my faith in the honesty and integrity of this government has been shaken by so many other actions - they are bullies and incapable of governing in the best interest of all of Canada.
Even if they are exonerated it will do nothing to restore my faith.
I will continue to wonder how many high placed and high priced people participated in a coverup of a scam.
