Newfoundland and Labrador NDP Leader Lorraine Michael says the national New Democratic Party will unite behind its new leader.

Quebec MP Thomas Mulcair was elected after four ballots at the party’s convention over the weekend.

Michael was in Toronto for the convention.

She said people shouldn't compare Mulcair with former leader Jack Layton.

“I don't buy this thing of, you know, stepping into somebody else's shoes,” said Michael. “It's up to Tom now, and I know he's up for it, to be Tom Mulcair, to give his style of leadership.”

Michael says the NDP's success in the last election was as much about what the party stands for as it was about its leader.

The NDP won a record-breaking 103 seats in the last federal election.
