1 dead in north Toronto fire

A 39-year-old man has died in an early morning house fire in the city's north end.

The fire broke out around 4 a.m. in the basement of a home at 162 Chelmsford Avenue, near Bathurst Street and Steeles Avenue West.

Toronto fire chief Roy Law said the victim, who was discovered in the basement, wasn't alone in the house.

"There was a mother and father that were living up in the top floor and it was their son who was located in the basement. The mother and father got out of the premises and are being housed in a nearby residence until we make arrangements for their housing," he said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
