OTTAWA - The Tories used their majority on a House of Commons committee to call for tighter rules that would compel the CBC to be more transparent in responding to access-to-information requests.

In a report Wednesday, the committee asked the government to consider amending a section of the Access to Information Act that protects the CBC's journalistic, creative and programming activities from disclosure.

The report does not specify what amendment the committee is seeking, but notes some experts have said the information commissioner of Canada should be able to examine withheld records to make an independent judgment when a complaint is made.

The CBC came under the act in 2007, and has been fighting in the courts and elsewhere to withhold sensitive records from disclosure.

The corporation has been flooded with requests from Sun Media Corp., owned by Quebecor Media Inc., whose journalists have publicly lambasted CBC for non-disclosure as well as for profligacy.

Opposition NDP members of the committee issued a dissenting report Wednesday, saying the CBC matter was being properly handled by the information commissioner and the courts, and that Parliament should not interfere.

The committee is asking for a government response within 60 days.

The majority report was issued a day before the federal budget, which is expected to cut the CBC's annual budget by up to 10 per cent.

The point is that the CBC has become totally irrelevant? and trying to block the reasoned and reasonable ATI that have been made are just one more indication of how secretative and irrelevant the state broadcaster has become to Canadians.

As for the back door way of destroying public broadcasting - the cuts came after the CBC received their $60.0 million increase and therefore it was up front and remember that this cut is $250.0 million less than what the LPC cut the last time out.

The back door is in 2014 when the CBC rights to broadcast the leafs games expires and with Bell and Roger owning the MLS group, the chances are good that the rights will go to their sports outlets along with the $300.00 in ad revenue.

That is when the CBC is "destroyed" and the CPC hands will be clean.

I'm sorry but you are all wrong. The federal government has no business providing funds to a network. That creates bias and that is not democratic. If you want TRUE DEMOCRACY, maybe Canada should open up some of its closed markets.

like what - the health care market? How about a contract military, mercenary RCMP officers and federal prisons to the lowest bidder?

We no longer have a democracy! IMO The Harper government is now a dictatorship! He is silencing the CBC and the environmentalists! Taking away freedom of speech from those he opposes! He cares nothing about the destruction of the environment ! He cares only about Power, control and greed! This reminds me of the McCarthy era only hes not going after communists, he is going after environmentalists and anyone who opposes Him! Oil is more important then Canada or Canadians!

In a TRUE democracy, the federal government wouldn't pay out to a broadcasting network. In a TRUE democracy, anybody with an opinion would be able to fund their own news network. The CBC is nothing more than Liberal bias and the government has no business regulating television. Harper would be giving Canada if he cut CBC funding entirely.

Anyone with an axe to grind and the wherewithal to fund their own network can pretty much do so. The CBC is a mandated media voice unfettered by any particular private agenda or undue influence.

Democracy does not mean corporatist anarchy subjected to the whims of the rich and powerful with no regulation.

Democracy does not demand a particular monetary or wealth distribution system.

Does Mr. Harper find Sunchannel/Quebecor to be friendlier to him and his government. Will this in any way be helpful to business operations at Quebecor. Why do I feel that this government is pulling a fast one on all of us. Is that just an overly sensitive sense of paranoia ??

I read this entire story thinking it should be reversed somehow: the CBC should have greater access to the machinations of the Harper gov't. As for Quebecor it can go p33 up a rope.

Given Harper's straussian nature this comes as no surprise.

So the CBC must be more transparent then the government that came to power in 2006 saying they will be fresh air: transparent, ethical, hard working, selfless, and great for Canada.

Harper`s National Anti-Social Party sucks.
