Chalk it up to a thrilling and heart-breaking seven-game series, a majority of Canadians have picked the 2011 Stanley Cup Playoffs as one of the most memorable.
An Ipsos Reid survey found that 37% picked the Bruins win as one of the top 3 answers when asked "which Stanley Cup year do you remember most.” Other memorable years included the 1993 Montreal Canadiens win (22%) and the 1967 playoffs (16%), the last year the Toronto Maple Leafs won the Stanley Cup.
"I'm not surprised to see the '67 and '93 seasons rise to the top of the results, I think even non-fans have heard hockey lovers talk enough about those two seasons," says Reid Black, Brand Manager, Molson Canadian, who commissioned the survey.
Not surprisingly regional bias played into answers with 70% of B.C. residents not being able to shake the nightmarish end of last year's Stanley Cup Playoffs which saw the Canucks unable to win a fourth deciding game despite holding a series lead.
More than half, 55% of Quebeckers picked the 1993 Habs win as their most memorable Cup year.
While 24% of Albertans, who probably live in Edmonton, picked the 1984 Edmonton Oilers Cup win as their most memorable. Calgarians, undoubtedly favoured the 1989 Cup win, or the painful loss in 2004.
