Target Canada: UFCW Union Fights Rehiring Process For Employees At Bought-Out Zellers Stores

Posted: 03/28/2012 1:18 pm Updated: 03/28/2012 1:22 pm

SASKATOON - The union representing Zellers workers in Saskatoon is campaigning against the hiring policy of an American company taking over the Canadian retail chain.

Target announced last year that it will convert more than 100 Zellers stores as part of the takeover.

The United Food and Commercial Workers Union says Target has told Zellers employees that they are welcome to reapply for the same job.

Spokesman Derek Johnstone says that isn't fair to employees who have been in the same store, doing the same job for many years.

Target has said its stores are in Canada for the long haul and the company plans to invest in communities and be socially responsible.

Johnstone says treating Zellers workers with the respect that they have earned would be a good place to start.

There's a reason why the Zellers stores had to sell to Target. Should Target take on the mistakes Zellers made? Those former employees are free to apply for the same positions. They don't like the new terms of employment, they're free to go look for work elsewhere.

Target spent the money and is taking the risk they should make the decisions not the union if Target does not stand strong the will lose money and close the stores so then who wins!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Target Stores ,New employer, new rules. Given Walmart's attitude towards unions, I don't think their major competitor will be any more predisposed towards unions than they were.

Good luck unionizing Target. !!

How many employees would be jumping through hoops for customers knowing that their jobs were gone? The last time I was in Zellers the harassed clerk was trying her best, everyone complaining about a lack of goods in various departments, duh, they are trying to unload their current stock..how is this an employee's fault?
I support any move by unions to make sure that another Us monster corp doesn't slide in here and exploit workers like MalWarts does. I (and most of the people I know) who are or were union members boycott WalMart for obvious reasons; since Target apparently treats it's employees not that well in the US, not expecting an improvement here...I'll wait and see what Target's worker relations are like before I spend any money there

Find their stores dreary. Find an associate for help? never. Most employees seem aloof & uninterested. If ever a chain needed a boost, it's Zellers. Ex employees should have first shot, but Target will not accept their union.

So, back to square one – union is demanding “job security” based not on performance but on how many years you served.
You know… I do shop occasionally at Zellers; I do see same faces at cash registers and cannot understand how some of these employees keep their jobs for so many years, as there is no reason whatsoever to keep some of them for more than 10 minutes!
Based on this – I wish Target all the best in Canada and to hire people who will work hard to raise the reputation of this brand, and not the people who will continue to discourage shoppers to shop at Zellers / Target as some of them already did for many years!

I agree, that about sums it up as far as Zellers employees are concerned. I am looking forward to a better shopping experience with Target.

Apparently Target didn't do enough research to know that 60% of workers in Canada are unionized, as opposed to 17% of unionized workers in the United States. If Target doesn't want to fairly negotiate deal with unions then Target should stay where it belongs, in the United States.

Re: "60 % of workers in Canada are unionized"

Actually, you are wrong, according to Stats Canada , the unionization rate in 2010 was 31.5% It is, of course, much higher among public service workers, but not in private industry.

31.5% includes management. 60% is workers excluding management.

Oh please do not hire the zellers employes, worst check outs, ever. A sloth would do a better job.

I don't care about a US Retail chain moving to Canada. Many Canadians like me can drive 2-3 hours to US and do their retail shopping if they want. What I care about is US communication company moving to Canada. I'll dump my Rogers (probably the worst company I have known) for any US companies like ATT or Time warner.

I'm happy with WIND. Not sure if you have coverage.
06:56 PM on 03/28/2012
the problem with wind is their coverage, outside of the major cities, you get very poor to no reception. For my girlfriend who does not travel outside the city, 40dollars unlimited voice and data is great deal. Because I have to drive out of GTA to meet clients, wind is not an option and I am stuck with 200minutes and 6gb data for 120dollars a month.. SUCKS..!!!!

I don't think they need to put Zellers employees in line first for the jobs, they should have the freedom to choose their employees from all the applicants. That being said, Target is very anti-union and the employees they hire should have the right without prejudice or threat, to bring in a union if they so choose.

Unions are not always the best for the employees. YES Target should give long term employees of Zellers the first option of a job. People who have shopped at Zellers for years feel more comfortable when they see faces they know. Wish Target the best in Canada but this is not good faith that they are showing.

Anyone who's been in a Zellers lately knows that most of those employee's shouldn't be hired back.
