Saskberta: Alberta Wildrose Propose Saskatchewan-Alberta Merger In April Fools Prank

The Huffington Post Canada  |  By Posted: 04/ 1/2012 10:46 am Updated: 04/ 1/2012 11:44 am

It's a problem that has plagued western Canada. Alberta is rich in oil, with billions of barrels worth sitting below the surface. However, the nearest giant oil can is all the way in Rocanville, Sask. What's a westerner to do?

The Alberta Wildrose have announced they will be pursuing a merger with Saskatchewan, forming the province of Saskberta.

The Wildrose say the expansion will not only provide access to the giant oil can, but provide extra parking space.

“We also have a shared commitment to eliminate pirate activity on the North Saskatchewan River,” said Wildrose leader Danielle Smith in the statement.

If it sounds ridiculous, that's because the press release came out on April 1, as (you guessed it) an April Fools prank from the opposition party.

The phony release adds that the merger would finally bring NHL hockey to Saskatchewan, proposing the team be named the Saskberta Grain Elevators.

And just in case you're not convinced it's all a joke, the release adds that "Wildrose stands for cuddling small animals, drawing pictures with children, loving cake, and provocative public transport."

It's a lighter note for this year's election campaign, which was rocked with controversy yesterday when a staffer for Alison Redford took to Twitter to question Smith's lack of children.

Well, they've got a sense of humour I'll grant them that.

But then again I knew that after perusing their "platform."

I would fully support complete secession of Alberta from the rest of us. Keep your filthy tar sands to yourselves and leave us and the rest of humanity out of it.

What time zone would Saskberta be in
12:34 PM on 04/01/2012
Might ask the same about Lloydeminster? I think thats the town that sits on the border and must have 2 times zones 6 months of the year
01:24 PM on 04/01/2012
No, Lloydminster operates on Alberta time year round.
