Bell Seeks Pay-Phone Rate Hike To $1 From 50 Cents

Bell Pay Phone Rate Price

GATINEAU, Que. - Bell Canada and Bell Aliant Inc. want to double the price of a local pay-phone call.

They are asking the CRTC to approve a rate increase that would raise the cost of a cash call to $1 from 50 cents and raise calling card or debit card calls to $2 from $1.

The companies say they need more money to deal with new loonies being brought out by the Royal Canadian Mint.

They say the existing technology won't be able to recognize the new coins.

The application has angered consumer and anti-poverty groups.

They say the increase hurts people who can't afford cellphone or landline service.

The Public Interest Advocacy Centre is urging people to contact the CRTC to oppose the increase.

"We don't think Bell's proposed pay phone charge increase is right," the centre says in a flyer urging opposition to the hike.

The companies, however, say without the extra money, pay phones will disappear faster.

"The new $1 coin will have different characteristics from the current ones and so will not be recognized by the current coin validation systems," they say in their application to the regulator.

"Permitting the companies to recover the costs associated with upgrading their pay phones to accept the new $1 coins through rate increases for local pay phone calls will also assist the companies in slowing the decommissioning of pay phones as profitability will be more likely."

They say pay phone use has been steadily eroded by increasing cell phone usage.

Have you been talking to Vic Toews again?

Seriously, I would suspect the last time a drug dealer used a payphone to make a deal was when they were answering a buzz from their pager.

Bell has become a joke I used them for 2 decades my bills were always 70.00 a month that included a few perks like call waiting identacall and a small long distance plan. Several times I contacted them about the rate to see if we could work out a deal everytime that was the best they could do. I left them went to my cable provider for 15.00 per month for the same service, Bell has called me no less that 30 times to attempt to get me back/
They are a large company that has no clue...........

I rarely see a payphone these days, they used to be at every convenience store and bus station.

Welcome to competition people. Back 25 years ago, when monopolies were around, long distance rates paid to keep other costs low. Business fought that and demanded competition to lower their cost. Now we have choice and a lot more cost. Screw the little guy, we went along with the plan, like a donkey after a carrot. Now it's time to pay the piper.

Bell makes millions in profit, if they need to replace the pay phones to accept the new coins then they should do it with their profit and keep the cost the same to consumers. Before starting my career I worked in a lot of factories. When a machine breaks down or needs to be replaced, they didn't up the price of the product. When newer machines were bought, they didn't increase the cost to consumers.

Even though the increase is ridiculous, some posters have a hard time reading. As you know, payphones can also be used for long distance calls so you might have to use loonies. The new coins won't work so all pay phones have to be converted. Got it?

So? That's a firmware issue, something that could be done from the main office and sent out to all payphones easily enough.

Uh, if a phone call is only 50c then why does it matter whether or not the phones recognize the new loonies? They aren't changing quarters, and it's not like they give change. B S .

April fools? Seriously a 200% increase!
03:58 PM on 04/02/2012
So how does the re-tooling justify the increase from $1 to $2 when using debit or credit cards? Might this be the time that the CRTC FINALLY says "no" to one of the oligopolies?

What makes Bell think people are going to use the pay phones once they are 1$. It is only 50cents now. So quarters are being used not loonies. These phone booths are so filthy who really wants to use them. I do not have a cell nor do I want one again. Just not needed. Bell is making a very bad move doing this. There are some who use the pay phone because they have no other phone. Bell give better service and your customers will not be leaving to go to someone who really cares about you as a customer.

Sounds like BS to me. Just use quarters.
