PM Harper Promises Windsor New Bridge

Ambassador Bridge

Prime Minister Stephen Harper is determined to get a new bridge built between Windsor and Detroit.

He is also frustrated with Matty Moroun, the billionaire owner of the Ambassador Bridge, one of two crossings in Windsor.

"This is the biggest single corridor of trade in the world and the concept that somebody could claim that he privately owns it all is, to me, ludicrous but to some degree that is the situation we're dealing with," the prime minister said.

Harper made the comments Monday while attending a summit with the presidents of the United States and Mexico in Washington.

When asked why Canada does not partner with the Obama administration on the project, Harper said Canada is dealing with Michigan first, but that this crossing has unique issues.

"We think it is essential, let's be frank about that," Harper said. "There is a bridge there today that has a private owner and my understanding of the private owner's position is that he not only owns the bridge but somehow owns the broader crossing. Of course, we don't accept that. It's obviously public space.

"I think the preference of all governments would be public infrastructure."

Matthew Moroun, on behalf of the Detroit International Bridge Company, responded Tuesday to Harper's comments.

"I renew my invitation to the prime minister's office or the transport minister's office to discuss resolution," Moroun wrote in a statement. "If the government officials agree that a smooth-running border crossing is the true goal, then the only two remaining elements necessary for resolution are: Canada's respect of our private economic interests and our mutual respect of the rule of law."

The bridge company had previously invited Transport Minister Denis Lebel to sit down and discuss how the company and ministry could "cooperate in the future."

Canada has already offered Michigan $550 million to help build the new bridge.

That is in addition the cost that will be paid out by the Canadian govt.

When I was a kid, my aunt from Indiana (rest her soul) came to visit us in Michigan and mentioned to my mother that a fortune teller had once told her that she would "eat bread in two countries." The trip to Michigan was about as far as she had ever traveled and she didn't think it was a plausible fortune. So my mother suggested we cross into Windsor. We went over the bridge and stopped off at the McDonalds there and my aunt had a hamburger (the bun qualifying as bread in another country, we decided).

There is a long history here that includes Warren Buffett. They've been talking for the longest time about this additional bridge to undercut the monopoly. It's hard to find the right land and access is difficult but it should be done ASAP

I hope that our 2 govts. build a new bridge, and then we seriously undercut Moroun with the tolls. Moroun has been an #*&#$# for far too long.

Good luck with that Matty! Harper is ok with showering public money on his buddies but "rule of law"? Not so much, especially when the laws get in his way.

I love Mr. Moroun's statement. So he is happy to work towards a resolution as long as it continues his monopoly. I thought Mr. Moroun was a devout advocate of the free market. As such he should be willing to compete for business. He should have no worries, because we all know that there is no way that government can compete with private business when it comes to offering services, right? So Mr. Moroun, let the market decide.

I think this really put things in perspective when our conservative prime minister says certain items should be public goods (in this case a bridge) because it effects the public and thus private options may not be most efficient. Where as the Michigan senate(could have been the Michigan house) in a democratic state were were bought off with less than 500k to veto a new bridge, because their personal interest sat higher than the public interest.

Wait a minute. It maybe true that members of our government accepted money to stop this bridge and I believe that was not right, however, there are many citizens of this state that are not all for the construction of that bridge. Some like myself do not feel that we have been given enough good reasons to build it and that our questions have not been answered. Maybe the newspapers, television station and elected officials where you are are answering your questions but over here we get next to nothing except a Governor that is hell bent to build it with little discussion and as yet, we haven't been given the right to vote for it. Until I hear more than "because we want it", it is not in the PUBLIC INTEREST.

How about this. 1) The Ontario gov was going to pay for the vast majority of the project just to get it off the ground. 2) The hour(s) long line ups to cross the border with ~$350,000,000 dollars of goods crossing that very bridge each way everyday.3) The bridge is not properly connected to the interstate system, so you impose traffic on downtown routes as there is no alternative.
Reducing that physical barrier will only increase the amount of trade, the other thing it will do is environmental ; thousands of cars are not sitting there idling needlessly. Lastly avoiding burnt out downtown Detroit might leave your guests with a better taste of the city and state.

Gotta have a new bridge so I can get over there faster to do more cross border shopping thanks to the new rules that will allow more junk to be bought in the US and brought back to poor Ontarians who can't afford to shop in Ontario because the rising dollar has limited the ability to shop in WalMart.

Like it or not, Ontario is still the engine of the Canadian economy and unless Albertans can diversify their economy apart from the tar sands, they will simply remain a polluted tar patch.

Alberta has always been an oil patch boom or bust province. Busted, they look to Ottawa for $ handouts. Booming they love to lecture Ottawa with an arrogance that knows no bounds.
