OTTAWA - Embattled Industry Minister Christian Paradis has lost another staff member amid a controversy.

The Conservative government emphasized Thursday that Paradis's former director of communications Richard Walker was no longer in his employ.

CTV News reported on Wednesday that Walker had charged personal expenses to a government credit card during a trip to Las Vegas. The network said he did not reimburse the government for five months.

Neither Paradis's office nor Government House Leader Peter Van Loan disputed the details. A government source said that Walker had discussed leaving Paradis's office some time ago because of a health issue.

"We are talking about a former employee," Van Loan told the Commons. "That is an important point.

"The second point is that all monies have been recovered. The taxpayers are not on the hook for a single dime. That is exactly how our government should act in the circumstances."

Margaux Stastny, a spokeswoman for Paradis, would not say why it took five months for the expenses to be repaid.

Paradis himself has faced calls for his resignation. Two weeks ago, the conflict of interest and ethics commissioner ruled he had broken the rules when he gave privileged access to his department to a former Conservative colleague.

In question period, NDP MP Alexandre Boulerice called Paradis "the conflict of interest minister."

"Will the minister finally put on some pants and take responsibility for all these scandals and resign, or does he think that playing blackjack at Caesar's Palace is an acceptable government expense?" Boulerice said.

Walker is not the first staffer in Paradis' office to resign over an ethics issue.

Former adviser Sebastien Togneri quit in 2010 after it was revealed he had meddled in several access to information requests when Paradis was Public Works Minister. The information commissioner later ruled that Togneri had violated the Access to Information Act, but the RCMP did not lay charges.

Two other staffers who also were involved in the access requests kept their jobs with Paradis.

The issue of credit card expenses is reminiscent of another controversy that embroiled former Liberal junior minister Ethel Blondin-Andrew in 1996. She admitted to charging personal expenses, including a fur coat, to a government credit card for three years because she did not have a personal card.

In that case, Blondin-Andrew reimbursed the government each month and said nobody had told her what she was doing was improper.

These guys make the Mulroney years look like Romper Room. Anyone want to bet on a Cabinet shuffle as a lame attempt to trick the unwashed masses. Won't work Steve, we're definitely on to you and that ganag of crooks you call your inner circle.

Look people, we have to be a little more patient with these Harper conservatives. Remember, they were trained in and advocate for private corporations and the rules are a bit different there. Stock holders don't scream if you diddle them out of a few bucks. Corporatists are allowed special privilages. After all, if it wasn't for them who would we groundlings have to look up to. I know that it isn't fair but what are you going to do; you only have one vote.

This is window dressing.

The rot is pervasive.

We will need to walk back much of what the Cons have done.

Call mail or visit your local ABC riding offices.
Get involved early, it does not take much of your time to make a big difference.

I am more outraged at the salaries listed for our representatives than this so called scandal. We have slightly more than 1/10 the the population of the U.S., yet, our members of parliament make salaries comparable to the President of the U.S., members of Congress and Senate. How do we justify paying these keepers of 10 fiefdoms and three territories these exorbitant salaries?
02:15 AM on 04/06/2012
So you should make 1/10th of someone doing the same work in the U.S.? For the actual work of governing I feel they might be a bit overpaid. The desire to serve your country should be foremost. But the aspect of being so in the public eye and that added 24/7 baggage makes me cut them some slack as far as basic wage goes. It can be a vicious job. It is the ethics that I demand 100%. It is ethics that so often fall short and cost so much in so many ways.

In my case, I work in the private sector which supports these public servants( a misnomer) so I don't feel they should be earning the same salary as their counter parts in the U.S. but not 1/10th of the salary; 1/3 will do. As for the 24/7 baggage, I am sure we can both agree that most of these politicians reap financial rewards 10 fold as consultants or directors at major firms once they leave office. That is their main goal in becoming MP(s) not the altruistic BS they sell to the voters. I do agree with you on the ethics aspect. That is the area where I expect 100% on their part.

Isn't it about time the Huffington Post add a new category?
Besides Politics, Business, World, and Sports the new one could be called: Latest Tory Scandal.

I think it would be news if someone in the Cons ranks was NOT doing something illegal or unethical! Get ready next week to support the Campaign to Build One Big Campaign.

It still amazes me that anyone in public office in 2012 doesn't understand that eventually whatever transgressions you commit WILL be found out. Whether its taking money you shouldn't or sleeping with someone who you shouldn't - this is the age of the electronic footprint and the ability for anyone to take a picture or a video with their phone. Big brother is watching all the time!

It is a matter of how important they feel. Plenty of those caught simply get away with it. Others misjudge their importance and end up under the bus.
