Peter MacKay: Rex Murphy Not A Fan Of 'Honorary' Defence Minister And F-35 Purchase (VIDEO)

The pressure on Defence Minister Peter MacKay to step down over the auditor general's scathing report on the F-35 purchase process is mounting.

Rex Murphy is just the latest prominent pundit to savage MacKay over his handling of the widening scandal.

"Is anyone in charge? Or is Peter MacKay a kind of honorary Defence Minister?" Murphy asks. "A real minister would resign after this week's sad comedy."

Murphy wonders how MacKay has managed to keep the rank and privileges of high office, such as helicopter trips, while somehow evading responsibility when anything of importance happens.

Earlier this week, columnist Lawrence Martin was among those who suggested cabinet is in need of an immediate overhaul, starting with MacKay.

The Toronto Star's Tim Harper argued that it's too risky for Harper to force MacKay from cabinet. "He has a strong following in the party and he represents the moderate wing of the Conservatives. Harper would risk too much political blowback if he demoted him."

Murphy is less concerned with whether MacKay will step down than with the fact that the Conservatives are willing to spend $25 billion on a dubious fighter jet without proper consideration while bringing brutal efficiency to the reduction of the civil service by nearly 20,000 jobs.

"To save $5 billion they'll squeeze the turnip until it can recite the order paper in Latin, but to push $25 billion out the door, well, they're going to work to 'improve the process.'"

Why is there a clip of the the F-35B? That take off video has nothing to do with what this article is about.

Peter and the government just got owned! I consider myself a Progressive Conservative but I'm still kind of sore that the Government-in-Council scrapped the "Progressive". Progressivism as a philosophy is a very important thing in Canadian politics. Rex is right about McKay et. al. Also, the all-singing, all-dancing F-35 is a dog that won't hunt. Canada needs a better fighter at a better price.

Rex is a bit of a loose cannon, he will not get a Senate seat this way. But his question is an honest one, why is McKay still "Honourary" Defence Minister? The story has gotten worse since Rex created this story, McKay knew before the last election that the estimates were pipe dreams, the entire CON power structure knew that the cost estimates had all of the substance of cotton candy and they sold it like it was stainless steel. But cost is only one factor, how about the reports of these things being useless in the Arctic? The only place in the world that Canada might actually be challenged would be defenseless. And we will not know whether they actually do the things that the manufacturer promises until 2019 How is this good fiscal sense? Go with the Grippen, it is on the market at half the projected price or less right now, it does everything that the f-35 promises NOW, it is designed to work in the NORTHERN (including arctic) Hemisphere, it has already been adapted to American weaponry. Check it out; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-3MACYJ5AI. Just think, we would not be in this dilemma if we had kept Avro, we would have been teaching the Americans how to make Fighters.

At what point will people realize that our democracy is fading badly. What else will we accept from the people who claim to work in our best interest? Is there an objective standard of conduct or is ours a democracy of sentiment and opinion alone?

With every article that touches on the F35, we get a picture on its first carrier landing. So, what Canadian carrier will we be using the F35 on? And, to MacKay's statement that the F35 would never suffer engine failure -- is he for real?? Name me one single-engined a/c that never sufferedd engine failure. Why is it that we are content with other naions' castoffs for our navy and army, but need to buy the most expensive, and often most useless aircraft for our Air Force!

"Never failing engines" is a potato farmers equivalent to kicking the tires on a used tractor to see if the engine works good, or a City Fella checking a horses teeth to see if it can run good. Only in this case the tractor doesn't exist yet, and the horse is just a gleam in a stallions eye, but the potatoe farmer is real, and he is out in the potato patch with his gum boots and shovel and talking "aw shucks, my dog sure is LOYAL" He sure as shiite is not a defense Minister!

If I knew about the F-35's costing $25 Billion or more before the last election, they knew about it. Contemptuous Cons, I cant wait till they're gone.

Harper was found in contempt of Parliament for not disclosing true costs to the House. He did it again with the Omnibus Crime Bill and negated to give costs again in regards to the F-35 fighters.
For Harper to pretend that the cost issue is not a problem flags the fact this man is not suitable to run the country. He has no plausable deniability when it comes to giving costs to Parliament. We as citizens must demand his resignation prior to the final say on his budget.

Good for you Rex Murphy for telling how it is.

Those Tory ministers should all resign plus the PM.

The Tory's have there heads stuck so deep in the sand what do you expect from them, they all think there above the law.

Everyone I talk or chat with say they would never vote for the Tory's, then who did?

Harper's government needs a good house cleaning from top to bottom.

I can't believe this F-35 purchase debacle is suddenly front-and-centre. Here's a cluster of articles I posted about it on my blog spot in July of last year:
