Toronto Maple Leafs Apology: Team Says Sorry For Disappointing Season, Missing Playoffs Again

TORONTO - The Toronto Maple Leafs are apologizing for yet another disappointing season.

A letter to fans posted on the Leafs' website Monday asks forgiveness after the team missed the playoffs for the seventh straight year.

"The Toronto Maple Leafs are a public trust with the greatest fans in the world," reads the letter signed by Larry Tanenbaum, chairman of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment.

"We have fallen short of everyone's expectations, and for that we are sorry. We take full responsibility for how this team performs on the ice, and we make no excuses.

"The way this year ended was unacceptable. Results are the only measure of success in sports and the results speak for themselves."

The Leafs were in sixth place in the Eastern Conference in February, but went on to win just two of their next 17 games in a collapse they couldn't recover from.

Toronto general manager Brian Burke replaced head coach Ron Wilson with Randy Carlyle in March, but the damage was done and the Leafs finished 13th in the East.

Tanenbaum's letter makes no mention of Burke's future, only saying that "ownership believes in the plan for the Maple Leafs."

What are to be sorry about, they made their investor money, and I enjoy watching the Leafs lose.

I thought Canadians invented or at least stole the sport from someone less passive-agressive. Clearly there is something wrong in the state of Denmark.

Who needs to put a competitive team on the ice when you sell out every year no matter what?

You'd think the investors might want some of the play-off lucre.

They promise to get some "experienced" players. Translation: we'll see if there are any washed up old Leafs who'll work cheap so we can tell the rubes that fill this place that we're trying to build a winner.

Its a real shame only 2 Canadian teams in the playoffs. I think it will be a while before it changes. Calgary and Edmonton are rebuilding. Looks like Toronto and Montreal should start a rebuilding program as well. Leaves Vancouver, Winnipeg and Ottawa to hold down the fort. Not even sure where Winnipeg are at other than they were close to making the playoffs.

I actually remember thinking that when Harold Ballard died, the Leafs would finally have a chance at putting together a decent team. How many years ago was THAT?

Burke hired by the Leafs in Nov 2008 to rebuild the Leafs and they now have the longest streak of missing the playoffs and the longest streak between cup wins. Florida Panthers hired Dave Tallon on May 2010 and they are in the playoffs and the Leafs are out. Atlanta team moves to Winnipeg in 2011-12 and with very little changes to the team, they almost make the playoffs and finished above the Leafs. Why is Burke still employed????????

I thought whoever started the "Let's Go Blue Jays, Let's Go" chant at the game last week was BRILLIANT! We should make it a tradition if they just plan to continue their tradition of losing...

I was at a game a few years ago where the Leafs were getting spanked by the Avalanche. The loudest cheers were in the second intermission when the Tim Bits (minor atoms) were playing and in the third period when Andy Frost announced, "One minute to play in the period."

Been a fan my entire life. Standing by a team that sucks is very embarrassing, especially when you can afford to put a productive team on the ice! 50 blessed years, and nothing! Got to listen to Hab fans stick it too you all the blessed time. Toronto fans should boycott games until the start winning!!
