Teenage Girl Struck And Killed By GO Train

Posted: 04/10/2012 6:24 pm Updated: 04/11/2012 12:26 pm

A teenage girl was struck and killed by a GO Train on the Lakeshore West line on Tuesday afternoon, near Port Credit.

Police said the teen was walking with a high-school friend when she was struck and killed on the tracks by a westbound train around rush hour.

"A 17-year-old female that was walking along the tracks with a friend, did not hear a train approaching and one friend was able to get out of the way," said Fiona Thivierge, with Peel Regional Police.

"Kids tend to take this as a shortcut across tracks to get where they're going quicker. It seems like an easy way to do it, however these trains travel at a tremendous amount of speed and it is private property."

The incident caused significant delays and train service between Union Station and Port Credit was temporarily suspended, with shuttle trains operating between Clarkson and Aldershot and a GO Bus transporting passengers further west to Hamilton.

Service was restored by 7:22 p.m. after police completed an investigation. For more GO Train service updates, visit the GO Transit website.

See for yourself what I am talking about by law they have to post all violations they are there for the reading. I think I will copy and paste to all comments from you idiots from the rails...makes it easier to get the word out to suffering families and those who will be suffering due to the stupidity of the railway brotherhood. Would you get in a cab with a drunk? A bus? Why a train? Not me, not knowing the truth...sick bunch you are.

CANADIAN RAILWAY OFFICE OF ARBITRATION

Heard at Montreal
Concerning
CANADIAN NATIONAL RAILWAY COMPANY
and
BROTHERHOOD OF RAILWAY, AIRLINE AND STEAMSHIP CLERKS,
FREIGHT HANDLERS, EXPRESS AND STATION EMPLOYEES
DISPUTE:
Dismissal of Operator J. A. Grewar of Kitchener, Ontario, effective January 31, 1975, for violation of General Rule G of the Uniform Code of Operating Rules.
JOINT STATEMENT OF ISSUE:
On January 31, 1975, Operator J. A. Grewar was assigned as operator at Kitchener, Ontario, on the 2245 hours shift.
While still on duty, he was seen by Company officers consuming beer in the Beverage Room of the Station Hotel in Kitchener.
After a formal investigation the employee was discharged for violation of Rule G.
The Brotherhood has appealed the Company’s decision on the basis that, in their opinion, the discipline assessed was too severe and requested reinstatement of the employee in his former position with full compensation for time out of service commencing February 1, 1975.
The Company declined the request.

very tragic but preventable, I lived near the tracks as a kid and always CN would come and talk about not playing on the tracks, tracks are for trains and you should not be there. Do not say oh shoot it will take me 5 minutes or 20 minutes or whatever minutes more if do not take the short cut across the tracks.,Think of a train with all that mass hitting you at 140 km an hour, think of your family, going to the morque to identify what is left of you, think of the train operator that has to leave his or her job for 6 months or more because of the trauma of seeing you smashed to pieces, not pretty, is it now is thatshort cut worth it
Sadly people still think they will never get hit , they will always see the train , always always,
but remember there is no coming back once you have been hit.

The girl may not have seen the train, but the crew of the train would have seen her and of course not been able to do anything about it.How do you get that out of your head and then go home to your family?

Apparently the railways are good at some engineers have 10-30 deaths in their career.

My thoughts and prayers go to the family and friends of this young girl. Peace be with them.

It's amazing how a train hits on stupid teen, and it makes the news when several more people die from being hit by cars on a regular basis and no a word of it in the news... Trains and planes still remain a much safer from of transportation that cars at the end of the day.

a person being hit by a train is often a brutal and messy ordeal that is witnessed by many. that's why it makes the news. with the addition of mandatory seat belts in vehicles, most car crashes, even big ones, don't end up with ppl getting killed. you can bet that those with fatalities make the news, every time.

I feel for the poor girls family, but in reality, there is nobody to blame here on than herself. Her stupidity causes an entire family and small community grief.
07:12 AM on 04/11/2012
What the article doesn't mention is that Port Credit is in Mississauga, a city with +500,000 ppl, hardly a 'small' community. But I completely agree that it is her own fault.

My apologies, by small community, I meant her school/friends and such.

Who walks on train tracks with headphones blasting? Well, teenagers. Its sad that something so horrible happened when it was totally avoidable.

i had a friend that got killed by train because she had headphones on and assumed that because one train had passed on a set of double tracks that the way was clear. in a rare showing that day, it just so happened that another fast moving commuter train popped out going the other way as she crossed the tracks. the headphones were played up by the media as the cause of the accident tho i'm not sure that she would have heard the other train over the noise of the first one. that all being said, we are ultimately responsible for our own safety. if she had waited for the barriers to come up before crossing her fate might have been different. people get a little too complacent with dangers they're faced with daily, don't they?

It's not like the train is going to swerve out of the way. Darwin award. This is just sad and utterly unnecessary.

No, she was killed by her own stupidity. Might as well just walk down subway tracks or any major highway. What could go wrong?

I remember when I started taking the GO train regularly to work they used to have these signs in all the stations - Operation Lifesaver 2010. As I recall the goal was to stop pedestrian-rail accidents 2010. At the time I could not believe anyone actually walked on the tracks. Now here we are in 2012, and I just found out Operation Lifesaver is still in effect (http://www.operationlifesaver.ca/). It seems now their focus is more about car/train collisions now. Apparently though they were not successful. Sad.

Sadly, there will always be idiots walking on tracks somewhere. I feel for her family. I really do, but it is hard to fell anything for fools who throw their lives away foolishly.

This is the third time in the last 8 months that my commute has been affected by such an accident. Two were at the same location ( outside Port Credit ) and one was outside Clarkson.
At this point I'd be happy if GO stopped with the station improvements along that corridor and focused on securing that section of track from pedestrians. It's clear that there are problems between Mimico and Oakville. If the argument that this should be done to save people from themselves falls on deaf ears, then the colder position that these events put out tens of thousands of people each time they occur must suffice.

My condolences to the girl's family.

Walking the tracks is only part of the question. What was plugged into their ears that covered the noise of an approaching train? These things are hardly stealth technology.

Is it just me, or there has been quite of few of these deaths this year? Seems like a few kids were also killed in Calgary recently.

My sympathy to the friends and family of the victim. Hopefully her untimely death will serve as a wake call to others...
