The submarine HMCS Windsor re-enters the water today after a five-year, $45 million retrofit. The deal is just one of a number of recent big-ticket military investments by the Canadian government. Here's a look at some of the biggest Canadian Defence purchases of the past decade.

Seems that they were all quite failures, except perhaps the helicopters, which are badly needed to replace the venerable Sea Kings. The tanks are aging too, and the Leopard 2 was still the best choice. The American Abrams MA1 tank is a jet-engine powered monster not suited for Canadian forces. The Brits and French have good tanks, but the German tank is the best suited for all-around capability for Canadian forces, though its lack of adaptability to mine-clearing is a problem.
The old CF-18 Hornet need replacing. But the F-18E Super Hornet, which should really by called something else than F-18, is a proven, affordable replacement. Canada doesn't need a stealth fighter-bomber that can land vertically...
The subs : why Canada needs them ? I don't have a clue... It was lauded internationally as a very good deal for Canada back then, but has since proven to be a problem-laden deal...

The subs weren't needed, I'll give you that. The F-35s are a joke, most people will agree with that. The Leopard 2s are understandable. But the helicopters were important.
The Superhawks are to replace the Sea Kings, which right now take something like 30-40 hours of maintence for every 1 hour in the air (when they were new it was vice versa). It's the way the deal is being handled by both parties now that's the farce.

Why subs were bought, who knows, especially when helicopters needed.
Personally I think Helicopters could be bought off the shelf...
Jets no so sure, but Im sure there are drones that would do 90+% of the job at 1/4 of the cost

It might help if we ever appointed a Defense Minister who had actually worn a uniform, even if only in the reserves, so he or she might have some kind of background regarding weapon systems.
