Pitbulls Attack Calgary Woman

Pitbull

Two pitbulls dogs have been impounded after a woman was attacked over the weekend in the city's northeast.

City officials say the 35-year-old woman was speaking with the dogs' owner at the front entrance to their home in Applewood on Sunday when it happened.

The incident left the woman with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. She was bitten several times on the legs and face.

Bill Bruce, director Animal and Bylaw Services, expects the dogs will be destroyed due to the severity of the bites.

"Typically on a bite this severe it would be rare that we would not be recommending destruction," he said.

Bruce said the tragedy was consistent with what he called a disturbing trend.

Most dog attacks occurred in presence of owner

“Of the 127 dog bites we responded to last year, 75 happened with the owner being present. Dog ownership is a serious responsibility and the dog owner is responsible for all of their dog’s behaviours both on and off their property," he said.

Bruce said this incident should never have happened, but it serves as a warning to both pet owners and people who play with their animals not to make assumptions.

"The dog should be under your control especially if you're there. So again, just another head's up to us that if the owner is there, it doesn't mean that it's perfectly safe. Know the dog. Watch the dog. Be careful."

Charges are pending and a dangerous dog hearing is being scheduled.

The dogs will be assessed over the next few days and remain impounded until the completion of the dangerous dog hearing. The fine for a serious dog bite is $1,500.

I see lots of well trained dogs with very responsible owners but It seems the dumner people are the more likely they are to have a dog. Just wishful thinkiing but how about requiring an iq test to get a license before you own any dog?

Dogs aren't toys. No matter what size they are. Of course it's going to be a pitbull in the news again, and of course its going to be the pitbull blamed.
Maybe if these morons weren't allowed to have dogs unless properly taught about the dog's psychology, there wouldn't be so many big problems like this any more.
The dog's owners treat the dog as if they are dominant, and therefore the dog assumes it is the boss. When it assumes it is the boss, it makes the decisions. In this case the dog attacked this woman. The media is blaming the dogs for making a decision it felt it was entitled to make. you don't make a person a manager then kill him as soon as he makes a decision you deem "unfit". Most attacks are caused by little dogs, because these little dogs are treated as the dominant one in the pack, and therefore become aggressive when their authority is challenged. But what damage do they do? small slice in the finger? how come none of that is on the news?

For all the dog lovers here : the dog obeys the master because that’s how things works in the animal reign: the dog recognizes the owner as the leader of his pack. Another pack (the rest of the world that is) will be treated like enemy , fiercely protective, fangs, bites, blood, whatever it takes to bring the other pack down. The dog does not care for someone else . With training just good behavior can be achieved toward (other) humans .
Regarding the pit-bull owners, usually they have a limited brain capacity and these owners should be trained first in basic behavioral skills. Only after 20 years of intense training in Alberta and passing the exam these people should be allowed to go back and own/lick their disgusting dogs.

Owners are the problem. Pitbulls are one of the most loyal breeds out there. teach them that love makes you happy and that's what they'll do. But they are animals at the end of the day, and if you don't know how to properly assert yourself as the boss with your dog, it doesn't matter the breed, they can be dangerous. Pitbulls just happen to be stronger than most breeds, so can cause the most damage. I love my half-pit, and she loves EVERYONE she can. There is nothing she would like more than to lick your hand and say hello.

If it's the owners and not the breed, how come pitbulls are the breed who are known for this. It's a CONSTANT problem. My friend let what was supposed to be a sweet pitbull show her affection only to be bitten. "it was such a nice dog" until it wasn't...... PLEASE, keep your dog away from children.

Because pitbulls have a more aggressive nature, and therefore are more willing to be the dominant one in the pack. Because they are stronger and can cause more damage, when they decide to step up to the plate and be head honcho, more damage is done. Most dog attacks are caused by little dogs because the owners treat them as though they are dominant. However they don't do much damage, so it's not that big of a deal to the media.
It is the owners fault, because if the owner took responsibility and taught the dog that he was the dominant leader of his pack, those dogs would NOT have attacked that woman, unless he attacked first.
Everyone blames the pitbulls, and no one blames the morons who didn't know how to properly take care of they dog physically and psychologically.

Many of the pit bull stories are not even pit bulls. In the 70's German Shepherds, in the 80's Doberman's and in the 90's the Rottie was the bad guy. Steve Rio is correct that pits are one of the most friendly dogs around and I work with them all the time. It is the owners who don't have a clue how to handle and train these bully breed dogs that are the problem.

Okay this article bothers me and I'll tell you why-

I live in a rural area where all the dogs are 'farm dogs' which means they have the run of the farm, are never leashed or contained. That would be fine but I can't walk down the street past any of their homes with out getting chased and growled at. I never see a person and I have never once stepped on their property but weekly get harrassed by these dogs at 4 different homes as I walk to a nearby park. These are ll large dogs but not one of these dogs is a pitbull

In January the meanest one got even meaner and charged at me and attacked me. I had to call an ambulance, was taken to the hospital where I had to receive stitches

Of course this story was not reported by any media, not even our local newspaper. Yet I know that if it had been a pitbull that bit me and not a swiss mountain dog it would have been all over the news

The things is I'm not even mad at the dog, but I sure am mad at his people. Of course now I am scared to walk down my own street

If you can't be a responsible pet owner PLEASE do not get pets

I love dogs with all my heart, but this specie is the exception.. this is going to happen over and over again until a dam bill get passed prohibiting this devil dog in Canada, LIKE JUST GERMANY DID LONG TIME AGO.! I don't want to even think what could happen to one of our kids getting attacked in a park by one of this one.

ANY breed is capable of violence. Granted, the damage inflicted by Pit Bulls tends to be severe when an incident occurs. However, many breeds that have been groomed to exhibit unwavering courage and loyalty will attack seemingly without warning. German Shepherds, Dobermans, Cane Corsos, and even Standard Poodles have these traits in abundance. Breed specific bans are never the answer, if Pit Bulls (which actually encompass multiple breeds of Terrier) were banned, another breed would become the dog of choice. Irresponsible owners are to blame for Dog attacks, ALWAYS.

this breed need care and training and good owners. The problem is that the breed attracks the wrong kind of owners

when was the last time you heard of someone dying from a poodle bite? or a golden? . It's is just irresponsible to want to own a breed that can inflict this much damage ( that list includes not only pit bulls, but dobermans, rotwliers and maybe others as well). It says something about the personality of anyone who would want to own such an animal - It's like leaving a loaded gun lying arround

Unfortunately, any breed can bite seriously, but the pit, and rottweiler have very powerful jaws. THere was an awful story recently of a golden mix that killed an infant and one that killed its owner. It happens but not frequently.
06:58 AM on 04/13/2012
Clearly pitbulls are more lethal than other breeds. Is a teacup poodle going to kill you? No probably not. Whether you agree or not about a pitbull's capacity to kill is irrelevant. The fact of the matter is, fairly or unfairly they have a reputation for aggressiveness. That being the case, I'm sorry but there's no nice way to put this, if you own a pitbull or want to own a pitbull, by virtue of its reputation alone, you enjoy intimidating people. Period. Don't even bother trying to defend yourself. You enjoy intimidating people. End of story. I'm personally sick of dog owners whose first comment when their dog attacks someone is, "Oh he's never done anything like this in the past!" Sorry. That's just bs. Dog owners have an enormous capacity to overlook and excuse aggressive behaviour in their dog. Why? Because "it's my dog. I love my dog. blah blah blah insert generic excuse here."

Thank you Escaped. Responsible dog ownership is a major problem in the community that I live in. Too many dog owners are under the impression that leash and stoop and scoop bylaws don't apply to their particular pets. The reasoning seems to be, "I love my pet therefore everyone should love my pet"

I have always owned Labs, wouldn't have an agressive breed in the house. Reputedly gentle and good with kids but even this generality is false in 10% of them and all lab males are territorial and hyper vigilant to one degree or another. One of the reasons they are so good with kids "generally". Even then, I don't let anyone look them directly in the eye, don't allow anyone to touch or pet without proper introduction and never allow them off property without a leash. Pit Bull owners I have seen mostly fit the pattern you so aptly and accuraterly describe and think I am Over cautious. Funny, one of them had his dog shot on the main street for attacking another dog and I have never had so much as a fearfull look. It's okay to love your dogs, I and my wife love ours but it's not okay to fail to show responsibility for them.

Didn't they ban them in Ontario?
Should be a nationwide ban.

Yes, about 4 or 5 years ago. No breeding or importaton but dogs alive at that time were grandfathered. When the Dog Whisperer wanted to bring his last year, he couldn't because of that law.

Actually, they are trying to over turn the ban, which is great news in my books.

Assess and impound the owner also.
07:36 AM on 04/13/2012
Agreed. I'm sick of walking through parks and streets seeing dogs running at large, defecating all over the place while the owners stand around blithely giggling and smiling at their dogs. The prevailing sentiment seems to be, 'my dog is special. bylaws don't apply to my dog.'

I picked my Pit up off the streets. She was freezing and nearly starved to death. I did it to save her life but could not tell if she was mean because she was too weak. We all agreed, in the family, to watch her for any signs of aggression and to supervise her with the nieces and nephews that are frequently visiting. Fortunately, twelve years later, it has worked out perfectly. She has been a wonderful dog. But, I would not keep an aggressive dog. There are to many good dogs that need homes.

Mine was found tied to a dumbster at four months old. She is a year and a half now and a complete angel (except when she chews on my shoes). I'm glad you gave the dog a chance. :)

Thank you and I'm glad your dog has a chance too. My dog was abandoned, but we can tell she had not been abused. In addition to always having dogs, I am interested in them. I'm taking a young chihuahua to dog school now because I think it's important to train and socialize them. A young friend has some kind of collie mix that has bitten several people. He dog is not welcome here. I don't know what the problem is, but I do know you can't leave a dog in a crate for 16 hours a day.
10:55 PM on 04/12/2012
The problem is the wrong people tend to own pitbulls , people who are attracted by their aggressive reputation and have no idea how to train any dog, let alone a pitbull. I have seen some well trained pitbulls who with the right training, appeared gentle and never showed any signs of aggression

Well the breed was weaned of most human aggression early on when they were used for dog fighting and bull baiting. If a dog bite anyone, even in the middle of a dog fight, they were put down and not allowed to breed.

Can pits be aggressive? Certainly, especially unsocailzed and poorly trained pitbulls - which pitbull bans create. Like all terrier breeds they are working animals and are/can be dog/animal aggressive.

I doubt anyone who wrote this article even knows what a pitbull is, or whether or not the dog in question was a pitbull at all. This just goes to show how poorly the media reports and how quickly they appeal to mass fears.
07:40 AM on 04/13/2012
I agree oscat. If you own a pitbull, you enjoy intimidating other people. Why else would you own a dog with such a reputation? Anyone who says they're wonderful family pets is trotting that out as an excuse. They may well be wonderful family pets, I don't know. But I do know based on their reputation, they intimidate people. Clearly, if you own one, you've considered this and made a conscious decision that you want that.

actually most people I know who have pitbulls are in animal rescue or work as veterinarians, they tend to adopt pitbulls because they get to know certain dogs, see that they are good dogs and know the odds of getting adopted are stacked against them in getting adopted

you really should stop stereotyping people

I find it offensive that you make such a blanket statement about people who own pitbulls when it sounds like you don't actually know any. My minister has rescued a pitbull, my vet has rescued a pitbull, my sister-in-law who is a vet has rescued 2 pitbulls and is the most peaceful person I know, an elderly couple I visit has had a pitbull they rescued for 14 years......and I could go on and on. These are not people who are into intimidating others
