David Suzuki
Canadian environmentalist David Suzuki has resigned from the David Suzuki Foundation following worries that his opinions could endanger the foundation's charitable status.

Canadian environmentalist David Suzuki has resigned from the David Suzuki Foundation board following worries that his opinions could endanger the foundation's charitable status, the National Post reports.

He published an open letter on the foundation's website on Friday describing his decision to step down.

"I want to speak freely without fear that my words will be deemed too political, and harm the organization of which I am so proud," he wrote.

Suzuki's decision follows the Conservative government sets its sights on environmental groups in Canada that are preventing resource development, such as Enbridge's Northern Gateway Pipeline, Canada.com says.

The government's March 30 budget stated that non-profit organizations must provide information regarding political activities. It also committed $8 million to increase supervision of charities, the Globe and Mail reports.

Suzuki's letter responded to what he called "bullying" from the opposition and described the foundation's future. Read the full letter below:

Dear friends,

Some of you may have seen media coverage about my decision to step off the board of directors of the David Suzuki Foundation. I am writing to tell you more about this and what it means.

After my children and grandchildren, my greatest pride is the David Suzuki Foundation.

I am fiercely proud of how the Foundation brings science and solutions to environment problems. I'm determined to ensure that the Foundation continues to have the ability to solve critical environmental issues and bring hope for the future.

But I have reached a point in my life where I would like to consider myself an elder. I want to speak freely without fear that my words will be deemed too political, and harm the organization of which I am so proud. I am keenly aware that some governments, industries and special interest groups are working hard to silence us. They use threats to the Foundation's charitable status in attempts to mute its powerful voice on issues that matter deeply to you and many other Canadians.

This bullying demonstrates how important it is to speak out.

The Foundation's science-based, solutions-oriented research and educational work has enriched our democracy and reflected Canadian values for two decades. While not always happily received by governments or industrial interests, this work is strictly non-partisan, as required by the laws governing charities, and has made the Foundation one of the most trusted environmental voices in Canada.

Our opponents, however, are redoubling their efforts to marginalize the Foundation by getting at me, personally.

So last year, I made the decision to step off the board of directors of the David Suzuki Foundation. I remain one of its most active volunteers and committed major donors. This way I can fulfill my personal mission and the Foundation can continue to build on its inspiring work—for us and our grandchildren—in finding solutions to our shared, and very real, environmental challenges.

I hope you understand this decision and will continue to show your, steadfast support for my work in this concrete way:

Please share this letter with your family and friends and, at this critical moment, invite them to become supporters of the David Suzuki Foundation, by joining our online community or donating today.

Sincerely,

David Suzuki

Me thinks he's getting out ahead of the excrement storm brewing wrt source funding. In the end he may well be portrayed at best as naive and at worst, a traitor.

What massively depressing times. It's going to be a long 3.5 years.

Am I the only one that thinks David Suzuki stepping down from the David Suzuki foundation will not stop people from thinking he is related to it?

This should have been the leading story-not buried as a footer! We have a government in Ottawa that seeks to emulate what the USA has done under George W. Bush, call it Patriot's Act North. With $8 million more to go after those who are milking their status as a charity, the federal government hopes to expose ill practices and justify their hunt? Are the dollars that they'll spend going after the Suzuki Foundation going to be well spent? Let's have an audit of what they have found in their first year of sleuthing. Then, let's see if it was worth it.

If You want an appropriate eulogy about David Suzuki ask the many people disadvantaged by his stands on issues that have later proved to be wrong. It is one thing for a man to be wrong but quite another for someone to use his scientific credentials to promote poorly researched postions on, what is best classified in hindsite as Junk science. Meanwhile, he has used his attestations to enriched himself and his gaggle of followers at the expense of other. The world is years behind where it should be because of the "chicken little" crusades of the likes of Suzuki ., In his unprincipaled schemes to make money,he has delayed or cancelled necessary research and developements for the betterment of mankind. People have unnecessarily suffered and died because of stances taken by this man that influenced people and politicians, while he takes no personal resonsibility at all for the results of following his advice.
As far as I am concerned in a truly just world, rather that idolizing this man, he would be in jail for the miseries he has caused as a side effect of his persuit of money and status.

Jim as you may know a lot of tobacco farmers have had to give up growing tobacco and that has been a huge economic loss to them. And many many manufacturers have offshored where they do not have to pay a minimum wage or sometimes even any wage and they don't have to obey pollution laws. This has costs hundreds of thousands of jobs. Even to-day the herbicides you use are limited and the farmers are restricted also. Catalytic converters cost money and sweeps in industrial chimneys cost money. But think how many lives it saves to have cleaner air and food that isn't toxic. Just thhink of the savings to the health costs to reduce asthma or heart attscks. I would love to be able to buy food grown a few miles from where I live which is what I used to do until the farms became ugly subdivisions. I would love to pay more for meat and have it raised in a healthy way which also happens to be humane.

It is pretty sad when a Canadian icon - someone who inspired hundreds of thousands of kids to get interested in science, is portrayed as a criminal. Really what has David Suziki ever done but simply ask that we consider the environmental costs/risks to these projects. He hasn't asked we stop driving/flying/using computers etc - simply use smarter ways to keep doing all of that.

The economy will be hurt, people might loss more jobs, then there might be a lot of people who go hungry, ect., the global economy isn't doing so good. A safe and responsible oil delivery system needs to be in place. Not everyone can live off of the lands, over the years cities were formed, and grew so, Candians would share in the rewards of the royalties. Selling oil to China, would help our economy navigate through this Global Economic turmoil. New technologies are being developed to with respect to helping protect enviromental issues.

Liban - do you mind when the Red Cross or the Cancer society needs your dollars. Somehow I doubt it so why object to iving dollars to a leading Canadian environmental organization. Clean air, clean soil and clean water save endless lives. Do you think Suncor is going to embrace environmentalism. Do you think that the pollution created in China so you can buy a pair of jeans which costs five dollars leaving the factory in China and fifty dollars in WalMart is a saving? The Suzuki Foundation is far more important than the cancer society. In fact, a great deal of breast cancer is thanks to the use of chemicals which the Suzuki Foundation attemmpts to make illegal or at least restricted.

How long will we tolerate our scientists being bullied in the name of corporate greed?

"Suzuki's decision follows [as] the Conservative government sets its sights on environmental groups in Canada that are preventing resource development, such as Enbridge's Northern Gateway Pipeline".

Jus the tip of the iceberg as Harper's oppressive regime sets out to silence his critics.

First off, when did advocating for the environment become a strong involvement in partisan political activity? When did pushing for sustainability, conservation, and ecological responsibility become a 'no no'? And when is it politically partisan to be critical of government policy, and perhaps try to offer insight as an alternative to idiocy?

Suzuki only sits on the board for the charity, and the foundation does not necessarily share his views (although presumable, they obviously do). Yet, he shouldn't have to fear harming the charity because of what he says.

Further, this isn't about what the charity says, it about what it stands for. This turned into a war when the government called out charities like this to be radical, eco-terrorists. Anyone suggesting 'this is what they deserve for being politically charged' is a moron. Calling for for ecological responsibility on the part of the government (not just the Conservatives) and companies is not partisan.

This is only about charities like this getting in the way of the government. What about the Manning Foundation for Democratic Education? The mandate of a school said 'charity' supports:

"The Manning Centre believes that the conservative movement’s most important resource is its people, and that as a movement we must invest more in our grassroots activists and our future leaders."

The way politics are done in this country is getting scary.

David Suzuki's comments are put out after much research by what I see as a very dedicated team of real scientists. Of course this is going to rankle the corporate mindset. If they admit that they know the damage they will incur, they cannot later take their profits and leave the reparations on the backs of the taxpayers.

Harper and his ilk have decided that this cost has to be passed on to the taxpayer to bankrupt the country to force it into a position of getting rid of all the "socialist" programmes with which his ideology does not agree.

Harper decries the "interference" of foreign interest groups when it does not fall in line with his agenda, but you know he doesn't criticise the interference of groups such as Front Porch Strategies, The Heritage Foundation, the NRA.or any others who can pour cash into the coffers of his morally bankrupt party.

It is only when facts and opinions contradict the official line does the complaint of "interference" come into force.

Let's see what an audit reveals. My sense is he jumped ship ahead of being revealed as someone who takes money from foreign interests with intents other than eco-preservation. A zealot is a zealot. Suzuki lost all credibility a long time ago. His personal carbon footpring rivals a small city.

Will the DS Foundation keep paying the fruit-fly guy's expenses or will he dip into his ten million air-miles?

Political speech used be protected speech in this country. Now it's a crime for charities, one of the most important groups to be permitted political speech.

Charities care about issues and have viewpoints on how governments ought to treat those issues. Criminalizing their broadcast of those viewpoints can only be a bad thing for society and for a democratic country.

Stephen Harper has sliced yet another chunk of our democracy away.

What will be left of Canada when he's done?

So when are they going to revoke tax exemptions for churches which participate in partisan politics?
