With such a rich and varied choice in colours and patterns when it comes to fashion this spring, along with some strong beauty trends, figuring out the right makeup to go with your outfit calls for a little finesse.

As a general rule of thumb, makeup artist Carmelle da Roza suggests choosing one feature to accent or highlight to pull together your final look. “I often like to pull my cosmetic colour of choice from the smallest detail in an outfit for a not so obvious match, such as the stitching of a blouse,” she says.

Let the overall feel of your outfit inspire your makeup look, too. “If you are wearing loose, flowy fabrics, opt for a softer makeup application. Or if you are wearing stronger, more structured pieces, you can afford to go edgier with your makeup,” says Da Roza, who’s based in Toronto. Think thicker eyeliner or a bolder lip, she says.

Here are five style trends hot this season and the makeup that’ll pull together your look when wearing them. Full story continues below slideshow.

Style Trend: Neon

Pairing Spring's Style And Beauty Trends

Style trend: Neon

Makeup look: Neon’s big this season not only in fashion but in makeup, too, and you don’t have to shy away from wearing both at the same time, but just don’t focus on the same bright shade, says Da Roza. “If you are toting a neon yellow purse, try a fuchsia lip for contrast,” she suggests.

Style trend: Neutrals such as muted greys, greens and beiges

Makeup look: “When wearing muted neutrals you definitely have more freedom with your makeup and you can wear a slightly heavier look,” she says. Try an electric blue eyeliner (neon makeup is big this spring) or sweep of army green shadow across your lid for a little fun, suggests Da Roza.

Style trend: Pastels -- think cotton candy pink, mint green and lavender

Makeup look: As you may have guessed, going with pastel makeup will make you look too Easter-inspired. “To avoid looking too precious, when wearing pastels stick to neutral earthy tones with your makeup,” says Da Roza. She recommends a sandy beige shadow paired with a chocolate brown liner and glossy nude lip.

Style trend: Big, bold florals

Makeup look: When the pattern is oversized and bold as the florals that are on trend are, the floral trend this spring is more in your face rather than pretty and dainty. And so Da Roza suggests keeping makeup clean and minimal to avoid looking too busy. “A perfect pairing would be glowing skin, a clean eye and a bright red lip for a little pop,” she says.

Style trend: Orange -- Tangerine Tango is the colour of the year, after all

Makeup look: If you’re wearing orange clothing, go with warm colours with your makeup but avoid obviously orange cosmetics, says Da Roza. Instead, she suggests a peachy blush or touch of bronzer to warm up the skin while also playing up the orange in your outfit.
