Romanow Blasts Harper's Charter View (VIDEO)

Prime Minister Stephen Harper is on “the wrong side of history” by failing to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms to avoid stirring up lingering resentment in Quebec, says former Saskatchewan premier Roy Romanow.

In an interview with Evan Solomon, host of CBC’s Power & Politics, Romanow believes bitter divisions have dissipated over time, and that Harper is in a “very, very small minority of Canadians” not marking the occasion as a historic milestone.

“I’m saddened a bit that the prime minister would not recognize it as an important contribution to Canada’s nation-building, an articulation of our values and our responsibilities," he said. "However, he’s entitled to his point of view."

The prime minister called the 30th anniversary an “interesting and important step,” but noted the charter remains inextricably linked to the patriation of the constitution — and divisions around that remain “very real.”

Harper also noted the charter had roots in the Bill of Rights established by former Progressive Conservative prime minister, John Diefenbaker, in 1960.

Romanow suggested the statements were unnecessarily partisan in tone.

“There will be separatists who don’t like the process or perhaps even the substance – what can we do about that, except to explain in Quebec and elsewhere to Canada and elsewhere in the world that this country is one of the greatest, most fair-minded, most opportunity-filled nations in the world?” he said.

“I think that’s what we should be celebrating, and harbouring, in fact, raising the spectre, I find it tough to accept that a prime minister would raise it.”

Solomon also asked Romanow about NDP Leader Tom Mulcair’s support for a 2002 motion by the Parti Quebecois reaffirming that the Constitution Act was unacceptable for Quebec. Mulcair was a Liberal MNA at the time.

“I think when you are a prime minister, when you are a leader of the official opposition, you are working off what has been accomplished," Romanow said. "Imperfectly, I admit, but basically a tremendous product accomplished in the sense of building another block for strengthening the unity of this country."

Romanow was Saskatchewan’s attorney general and intricately involved in the high-stakes political negotiations in the run-up to the patriation of the constitution in 1982. Failure to bring home the constitution would have had “unconscionable and unfathomable” consequences for Canada, he said.

In the two-part, one-on-one interview on the 30th anniversary of the charter, Romanow also recounted details of the secret negotiations and political drama that characterized the run-up to the patriation of the constitution. He also offered his own account of the famous "Night of the Long Knives" — when politicians negotiated the final draft of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Doesn't Romanow know that Harper has declared all history prior to his regime no longer existent, let alone valid? All except 1812 and our status as a colony that is.

Harper is on a personal vendetta against the values and protections that Canadians enjoy under the Charter of Rights. He is introducing 'Republican' style politics to Canada, complete with the religious leanings and the assault on the rights of the less fortunate. If he had his way he would repeal womens rights and destroy our medicare system.

Stephane Harper quoted in a speech in 1997:

...........the establishment came down with a constitutional package which they put to a national referendum. The package included distinct society status for Quebec and some other changes, including some that would just horrify you, putting universal Medicare in our constitution, and feminist rights, and a whole bunch of other things.

He is clearly dangerous to all Canadians............

Another blithering IDIOT comes out of the past to speak out against Harper's refusal to celebrate a non-event like the flawed Charter which abridged the right and freedoms given us by the British North America Act of July 1, 1867.

Roy Romanow is out of his league when condemning Steven Harper's actions in not celebrating this piece of trash created by a raving lunatic like Pierre Trudeau.

I see nothing to justifiy why we need to celebrate 30 years for our current constitution. What is soo darn important about 30 years?

Harpo's on the wrong side of everything. The Cons desperately want to turn the clock back 50 years - ain't gonna happen. Time to slink into the 21st century, Stevie boy.

Grant Divine - sure see him in the news and involved with politics a lot in the past 20 year. ha ha ha!! Now, he's the definition of a news un-worthy, irrelevant, politician.

So long as Romanow is alive, and I am sure after he's gone, he will be relevant.

Why are we surprised? Harper has shown himself, time and time again, to be a small man, a small man with small ideas, a man of little intellect, a man with no heart, a man with little soul, a man who fudges the truth, an envious man, a man who is completely clueless as to what makes a prime minister great. And we gave him and his cohorts a majority. What were we thinking?
01:40 PM on 04/18/2012
If it was such a great document, why has no Quebec premiere of any party endorsed or approved it?

Or as "Spada" says, the Quebec premieres must be "... small man ...small ideas, ... little intellect, ... no heart... little soul.. fudge the truth...completely clueless"

I really feel this PM Harper is not only bad for our country he is bad for our history!! Hope Canadians will see his true character! and elect a responsible PM. A PM who will honour and respect and celebrate our great achievements such as the Charter Of Rights.
01:44 PM on 04/18/2012

Unfortunately, we don't get to vote for our PM, the party does.
02:04 PM on 04/18/2012
Well ChrisH75 it is the Party that must be changed that is what I'm talking about. We must understand that Conservative Party will not select any good leader so why west your vote? There is the Liberal Party or the NDP. I know no one could vote Liberal last election because all the scandal and luck of clear trusted leadership but by nature Liberal Party is superior to any Tories !!!!! And hopefully by Next election we will have real leader from the Liberals or the NDP.

Listening to Roy Romanow relate how well they knew the federal provincial file, the «pantry meeting», subsequent meetings without the presence of one of the important founding province and knowing that Quebec would be left on the outside looking in all the while denying that it should be referred as the night of «long knives» is beyond my comprehension.
To complicate this lack of comprehension is his answer as to why no one called Quebec representatives in the midst of these meetings. It leaves us with the impression that they knew they «had» Quebec and they took advantage of it. That may be well and fine for those who want to bash Quebec but it certainly allows Quebec to have credible objections to signing the constitution. Mt Romanow and all the others may have opinions and rationalisations for their not including a PQ Premier but the fact remains he was elected and represented a province of Canada. Would they have not called and ostracized any other province? I think not.

12:20 PM on 04/18/2012
The rest of the world is run by the same banksters Canada is.
The only nation I can think of that got rid of the neocons was Iceland, who recently forgave the people their debts and are putting the bankers on trial for creating massive debt based on fraud, like here in Canada.

Amazing how the western media totally blacked out the Iceland story.

We were doing a lot better before Harper took office. He turned a healthy surplus that would have provided shelter from the storm into a deficit before the storm even hit. We would be running a balanced budget right now if Paul Martin were PM. That's a fact.
