Students Must Sing O Canada, School Board Rules

Posted: 04/19/2012 11:10 pm Updated: 04/23/2012 8:24 am

Students in the Toronto Catholic District School Board will now be required to sing O Canada out loud instead of standing in silence while a pre-recorded version of the national anthem plays.

The school board passed the motion by a 7-3 vote at a meeting on Thursday evening.

Quick Poll

Should Canadian students be forced to sing the national anthem a capella?

VOTE

The motion was put forward by Ward 11 trustee Angela Kennedy who said the school board’s practice of playing a CD of the anthem over the PA system means students "listen rather than sing” the anthem.

Her motion states that students' failure to sing O Canada has been noticed at school graduations, celebrations, anniversaries and blessings.

“Veterans who have fought for our freedom would appreciate that students sing the words from the heart,” her motion reads.

I was tempted to go to the meeting at which this resolution was introduced - primarily to see if the trustees themselves open each meeting with a rousing a capella rendition of O Canada. (Do they? Can anyone confirm?) And if I found that they did not open each meeting with the anthem performed thusly, I was going to suggest they avoid hypocrisy by doing so themselves for a full year before forcing it on students. But I didn't go, thinking it certain that this meddlesome woman's ridiculous busy-body, waste-of-time motion would SURELY get nowhere.

Guess I should have known! Oh well... just another sound argument for the elimination of the RC school board and for the elimination of school boards.

How petty can some people be? "But,but, but, i don't wanna sing!"

Its the national anthem! Every country has one. They aren't about brainwashing the masses into nationalistic fervor, there about uniting the people together, despite all our differences, and to honor the country and it its history and to show respect for it.

A country is the people who live it! There are people who are bigots and spread hate towards other Canadians and would limit other peoples rights! They are the one who also claim to be patriotic Canadians and who would also want to force people to sing the national Anthem! They are hypocrites! Singing the national anthem does not mean you respect Canada or the people living in Canada! Respect for Canada to me, means respect for the people of Canada, freedom of choice, civil and human rights and fighting for those principals ! I have nothing against people singing the national anthem, I just believe it should be a choice not a requirement!

Of course no one should be forced to sing the Anthem, but it really speaks to callowness of those who don't.

Like you said, a country is the people who live it, and not singing is shows disrespect to all those in it, who make it as great as it is, and those who came before us all.

"Absolutely. Our forefathers didn't die so this generation could forget the lyrics to O Canada."

Want us to remember the national anthem? Perhaps stop leaving the next gen with massive, crippling debt.

'Freedom' is an interesting word, some folks should look up it's definition some time.

What is going on here in Canada? First a big Gala for the War of 1812 (really?!) yet nothing for the Charter of RIGHTS and FREEDOMS which guarantee our freedoms. Then a whole bunch of money spent to change the name of the Military BACK to have some reference to the British Monarchy in it, followed by cuts to everything else that ACTUALLY MATTERS to most of us!

NOW this whole kerfluffle about O Canada? Really? Is this where we are as a nation?

See, I think not, I think that this is where only a relatively small minority of our nation is, but unfortunately that relatively small minority (for some odd, undemocratic reason) has a majority in our Parliament. Yes, a majority that allows them to do as they like, while they only earned less than 40% of the vote, no run-off, no second round - to he** with what the majority wants.

THIS IS WHAT YOU GET WHEN A MINORITY STEALS POWER FROM THE MAJORITY - it's a giant, unrecognizable cluster****.

STOP SPLITTING THE VOTE!!

Oh, Canada.....

As a teacher I can tell you how this may play out. If students refuse to sing it is left up to the teacher to enforce this new rule. Enforcing rules costs time, time that would otherwise be spent learning. Coming this late in the year I can foresee some real problems developing.

I do not understand why anyone should be forced to sing, pledge, or do anything else that they are not comfortable with. People are expected to obey the laws, and laws need to be kept within the authority of government. The government, especially a local one, has no authority to demand that people to behave in a certain way. Laws can prohibit behaviours, but not force people to behave a specific way.

I once served in the Canadian Armed Forces, in the infantry, and I thought that I was serving to protect our freedoms. Forcing people to sing patriotic songs, even if it is the national anthem, is something the Soviets were fond of doing, but now we think this is a good idea in Canada.

You cannot force people to be patriotic. Why stop at singing the national anthem if you are going to force people to do this? Why not make these students wear a lapel pin of the flag, or sew Canadian flags patches onto the backpacks they take to school? And at home, of course they have a Canadian flag outside of their house.

I do not want Canada to turn into the USA, where every event, no matter how insignificant, starts with the playing of the national anthem. Or where every second person, vehicle or building has an America flag plastered on them.

What if it instills resentment in the government for its' encroachment upon our civil liberties, which in turn leads to a general desire to undermine society at every step? Is it such a great idea then?

how does being forced against your will to sing a song do anything for your patriotism but perhaps make you resent those forcing you...

We are a `free`country, right? Maybe just not free enough to make up our own minds, I guess...

I love Canada and I served in the military, but I do not like singing in front of strangers. It makes me uncomfortable. Who is the government to make me feel uncomfortable? They are the servants of the people, not the masters. People need to start remembering that.

Damn right they should sing the anthem, all schools in Canada should. If you are a Canadian then you should sing it every time it plays no matter where you are.It sickens me to think that kids just listen along, its a dark mark that needs to be erased.
