Quebec Anti-Corruption Arrests: Robert Lafreniere Hints More Arrests Coming

QUEBEC - Quebec's anti-corruption czar suggests this week's crackdown in a small city near Montreal is just the tip of the iceberg and could lead to more arrests.

Robert Lafreniere announced Thursday that his provincial anti-corruption squad currently has 17 separate investigations underway.

Lafreniere told legislative hearings that the majority of the ongoing investigations are being led by the provincial police, while four are being led by Quebec's revenue agency.

New charges might not be far off. Four files have already been handed over to the province's director of criminal prosecutions, he said.

Lafreniere's anti-corruption unit had its first major bust this week, arresting 14 people including construction magnate Tony Accurso. It also stopped politically connected players in an alleged scheme involving kickbacks and bribes in exchange for advantages in the awarding of public-works contracts.

The accused in that case are due back in court in June.

Lafreniere said the new charges could have a snowball effect. Some commentators have already likened the arrests to a crack in the armour of a corrupt system, which has been the focus of more than two years of scandal in the province.

The dragnet, he said, will put pressure on witnesses to start talking.

"This loosens tongues," Lafreniere said.

"It incites citizens — whom we really need to come forward with information — to meet with us, to tell us things. This has a major impact for us."

I drove through Montreal a few years ago.
I was surprised how poorly maintained the highway infrastructure was.
It seemed like every overpass i drove under had loose concrete crumbling away from underneath exposing rusty re-bar.
In a few places it looked like a repair/patch had been done but it takes years and years of neglect to get reinforced concrete structural elements to look like that.
Generations worth.
Why people would live in a city, and pay the taxes they do, and watch the place fall down around their ears is beyond me.
The cost to bring this decay back into order will be enormous.

They may want to think of arresting everyone in the province, just in case, it would make it easier.

But I wouldn't want to be that investigator or their family cause you know when you go after the corrupt, wealthy and powerful "things happen".

It will be interesting to watch as the investigation continues. At what point, as it exposes corruption higher and higher in Municipal and Provincial Government offices, will Politicians finally shut down the "anti-corruption squad?"

Or will sudden and unexplained "accidents" happen to investigators?

Must attend the Pothole Festival the year. Who'd have though that would be a tourist attraction?

The Govt allows tight control
E.G. No work is done 4 weeks of the year, everything shut down
Dont try and work without a license, you WILL face huge fines

Cost per KM of new build and repair higher than can average, yet roads are almostlike unmaintained dirt roads. La Hell Province

The road signs, lights, etc, I think its almost like Hey, Pierre, go put some lights on Guy st, and the guy goes and does what he thinks is good, no standards at all.
I have seen at least 15 different size stop signs, different placement, poles etc etc
Lights, advance green, delayed green, green arrow for pedestrians to cross, then it ok to hit(; them. Cross walks, death traps.....I drive a stretch approx 2 KM, there are 16 stop signs on the main street(de Salaberry), study in how not to do things, you laugh or you cry, I try to laugh

Have lived in 3 provinces and NWT, IMO Quebec has more corruption that all province, territories and Fed Govt combined.
Just look at the roads, after driving on them for 6 years, I shake my head and laugh. Quebec is a JOKE.

They are nowhere close to done. So far they have gone after small municipalities. Lets see if they have the guts to go after the big ones.

Let's face it: the same organized crime that occupies Italy, now made its home in Quebec and many locals seem to love it.
12:21 AM on 04/20/2012
Sure, the ones getting the kickbacks. I believe even them are complaining about the quality of the roads. It is not just Italians, while a large nbr of Italians in Mtl, there are many honest ones, it is a dysfunctional society, all the language crap has put the focus on it, instead of where it should be, quality of life. I like to call it la Hell Province, because that is what it is, although last 5 yrs have seen some improvement, maybe in another 20 years it will stop being 3rd world.
08:06 AM on 04/20/2012
I see things getting worse: the nationalists keep harping on language while the Mob has
infiltrated all areas of society - tax money goes to organized crime and its friends in government, while the health system goes to the dogs. Public works with the telltale orange cones go on forever, making driving a nightmare and businesses are destroyed because people cant't park. Then maybe premises are bought cheaply by those interested in chaos.

Yes, la Hell Province, good nickname!

When he is done can he turn his attention on to the CONservative party?
12:24 AM on 04/20/2012
unlikely, quebec is all about the Liberal party....might pull Paul Martin and Crentien in, although Cr pretty good at covering his tracks. Dont think Dion and Iggy involved, but all the QC lieutenants for sure

When u can take a big brown envelope on Sussex, not declare it than sue the government collect a cool mill$ out of tax payers and then only pay tax on half of the cash and not go to jail, now that corruption at its finest point. And by no means i am defending the Liberals. But Mulroney perched on his huge home on the the hill, renovations paid by tax payers and brown baggers, well i guess we save money not throwing him in jail for 15 yrs.
