Vancouver Island Speeding Motorcycle Seized (VIDEO)

Posted: 04/19/2012 3:36 pm Updated: 04/20/2012 10:58 am

SAANICH, B.C. - Police on Vancouver Island have seized the motorcycle they believe was featured in a YouTube video racing along the Trans-Canada Highway at speeds of almost 300 kilometres an hour.

Saanich police say a tip from the public led them to the suspect bike, a blue Yamaha, that bears scratches and other marks that match those visible in the video.

The motorcycle's owner is an Esquimalt woman, but police suspect her 25-year-old son was the offending driver, although they haven't been able to prove that yet.

The woman has been given tickets for speeding, driving without due care, excessive speeding, and driving without insurance — all of which could result in fines totalling almost $1,500.

Police say the woman's son has more than two dozen traffic tickets for issues such as speeding and not having a valid driver's licence, and the motorcycle was not insured on the day the video was shot.

The video, which was posted to an anonymous YouTube account on April 8 and has been viewed more than 100,000 times, shows a motorbike zooming between cars and trucks on the divided highway. (CFAX, The Canadian Press)

My god. Just one lane change and this person would have been toast. I almost got sick just watching this.

As a motorcycle rider for over thirty years, I am glad to see this idiot lose his wheels (or his mom's wheels as the case may be). Every year a couple of rice-rocketeers lose their lives on the twisty mountian roads near where I live.

What he was doing could have led to the death of another person on that road, yet he knowingly, willingly, did it. Such blatant disregard for the health and safety of others is nothing but an act of evil.

Some serious lane splitting there. Guy has some guts and/or a deathwish. I 've pushed 230 on my bike but had difficulty concentrating due to my underwear creeping into places where it shouldn't be.....

You need to wear spandex shorts for underwear, when you ride a motorcycle, so you don't have that problem.

More crime busting from YouTube.

This kid obviously has the driving skills to compete on a race track. Trouble is, he doesn't have the moral compass necessary to drive in public.

In Ontario the fine for driving without insurance is $5000 and rightly so.
Any respectable biker would turn the guy in. Turkeys like this drive up the costs of an already expensive necessity for many.
We ALL pay for crashes. Insurance and health care. How much does it cost to rehab a spinal injury, let alone lost wages and lost quality of life?

the cost to health care would be minimal as he'd bypass the emerg for the morgue.

Indeed. One bucket for the remains is all that would be needed.

Why not put limiters on private bikes and vehicles? My truck can do 220 kph but never went past 140 on it and only then on good conditions and usually do 110 kph 99% of the time. If I can pay the garage a few bucks to limit the speed on my son's dirt bike I'm sure it can be done on all. If you wanna go fast, buy a race car and join nascar or F1.

This is a prime example of a statistic waiting to be recorded. Problem is, he will probably add some innocent other statistics along with his own when the end comes.

I hate to admit it but I watched one from the Ukraine or Latvia where the guy was driving like this through heavy traffic in an urban area..quite a rush as I love motorcycles.. but ya very stupid..

Complete idiot. There are closed tracks for those who want to drive vehicles at high speeds; to endanger others on the highway is outrageous.

A very reckless act. One technology could easily prevent in the future. But for now, who ever was riding that thing should get more than a slap on the wrist. Risking other peoples lives like that is just nuts. The rider could have easily found a stretch of highway with no one on it to risk his/her own life.

Since fines and lack of a driver's license didn't deter this chap to risk his and other people's lives on the road maybe a year in jail might do the trick?
05:43 PM on 04/19/2012
Nah, I'm sick of having people go sit in jail at the tax payers expense. This kid has several violations for driving dangerously etc, and obviously hasn't learned his lesson.
Take his license for the next few years, probation after that, give him a couple hundred or thousand hours community service. Perhaps cleaning road sides, road kill, provincial road side stops etc.

It would fitting if the court could mandate the perp do volunteer work at a hospital physical rehab centre. Cleaning bed pans perhaps.
