EDMONTON - Wildrose Leader Danielle Smith was roundly booed and mocked at an Alberta election debate Thursday for questioning climate change, with Premier Alison Redford suggesting Smith in the province's top job would be a national embarrassment.

"There is still a debate in the scientific community," said Smith before being drowned out by a chorus of boos and catcalls from hundreds of people who attended a leaders debate outside CBC's downtown studio.

"And we're going to continue to watch the debate in the scientific community," she said raising her voice to be heard.

The debate was the last chance for voters to see all four party leaders trading shots together on a stage before heading to the polls Monday.

Redford's right-leaning Progressive Conservatives are facing a serious challenge from the further-right Wildrose to their 40-year-old dynasty, dating back to 1971.

Polls put Smith's party out in front. But one recent survey suggested Wildrose had seen a large early lead over Redford's team slip somewhat as anti-gay comments from one Wildrose candidate, racist comments from another, and Smith's assertion on global warming made headlines.

The Liberals have started calling the election a choice between "a bunch of bullies" and "a bunch of bigots."

The crowd at Thursday's forum was heavily weighted toward seniors and was a mostly NDP-partisan, judging from the decibel level of cheers when the individual leaders were introduced.

The climate-change debate was among the most spirited.

Emissions from Alberta's oilsands plants, along with its great inland lakes of toxic waste, have become the poster pictures for those who label Canada environmentally irresponsible.

The effects of those images were seen recently when environmental protesters helped block approval of the Keystone XL pipeline from Alberta to the United States on the grounds Canada needed to be sent a message to clean up its act.

It became an issue in the election campaign earlier this week, when Smith reiterated the Wildrose party's long-standing policy that the science of climate change is not settled.

Smith said despite her concerns, the Wildrose party would still take steps to reduce emissions through consumer rebates to spur investment in hybrid vehicles and energy efficient home retrofits.

"We're going to put in constructive policies," said Smith.

"Rebates are not going to fix this problem," NDP leader Brian Mason shot back.

"In my opinion, the science is completely settled. The only people that are disputing it are the phoney scientists funded by the oil industry," he said to cheers. "We need to get serious about it."

Mason said government needs to fix the problem at the industrial level with hard caps on emissions, moving away from coal-fired electricity generation, and funding more mass transit.

"There are a lot of things that could be done that should have been done a long time ago, but denying the science of climate change is just foolish."

Redford said if Alberta has a premier questioning climate change, it won't be taken seriously on the national or international stage.

"When I go to Washington and I talk to people in the White House, at Capitol Hill, and I'm trying to talk to them about why we need Keystone, they don't want to hear that I don't believe in climate change," she said.

"They want to know they have a premier and a leader from this province who is prepared to understand that this impacts our markets, this impacts our investors, and if we don't take it seriously it will impact our economy and our way of life."

Liberal Leader Raj Sherman said his party is also calling for hard caps on emissions, and said they aren't questioning climate change.

"Science informs our position," he said.

Recent polls have also suggest that traditional Liberal and NDP voters may be switching loyalties to the Progressive Conservatives as a palatable centrist alternative to block the right-wing Wildrose.

One video going viral on the Web depicts a young Alberta man admitting he'd rather have his face chewed off by rodents than vote PC, but will anyway to keep the Wildrose from the levers of power.

At the end of the debate, Smith urged people to vote straight up.

"You should vote in your heart who you think will best represent you in the legislature," she said.

"Having a government that has been in power for 41 years and created all of the problems that we have today, I think one thing that the opposition leaders will all agree on is that is not a government that deserves to have another majority."

Wildrose leader Danielle Smith said she was aware of Hunsperger's religious views.

  • Redford Under Seige

During the April 12 debate, the candidates for the Wildrose, Liberal and NDP took the opportunity to gang up on Progressive Conservative leader Alison Redford. It was an unsurprising tactic given that the Tories have held power in Alberta for 11 consecutive majority governments, although polls reveal the Wildrose may have a fighting chance.

  • Bus Cleavage

Backlash came swiftly from the PC, the Wildrose and Twitter users alike. Alison Redford herself issues an apology, but not before Smith revealed that she didn't have children due to fertility issues.

  • Awkward!

In a moment of levity, but mostly embarrassment for Danielle Smith, the Wildrose leader's dogs got frisky during a photo op in Calgary.

  • Controversial Issues

On April 10, for the second time, Wildrose leader Danielle Smith was called out for her supposed opposing stance on abortion and gay marriage. Smith however snuffed out the controversy: "When our members elected me they knew they were electing a candidate that was pro-choice and pro-gay marriage." The issues came up earlier in the election when Smith was less forthcoming on the subjects.

  • Tory Candidate Assaulted

Alberta's education minister Thomas Lukaszuk claimed he was assaulted while canvassing in an Edmonton neighbourhood. He said he knocked on the door of a residence with a Wildrose support sign and, once recognized, was punched by the resident within. The resident, Al Michalchuk, says he merely nudged Lukaszuk when he refused to leave.

The data shown on the graphs comes from reputable, verifiable sources. Where the graphs are posted is irrelevant to any intelligent viewer who understands science and graphical representations of data. It's pointless to argue with religious zealots who can't grasp that . Believe whatever makes you feel good,

" It really gives a good idea of just why the climate debate is broken. The ratio of ad hominem attacks to actual thoughtful discussion of science is just amazing, and the implicit assumption that there are no people of goodwill on the other side of the debate is both wrong and dangerous. I invite you to compare the tone, content, and tenor of his articles on climate with mine on this site. There have been five: [see article for links]. The first two try to pin down where skeptics do and don’t agree with the theory of catastrophic man-made climate change. The other three, including this one, have been lamentations on why the discourse around climate is so unproductive."

Well NO60, I really have to wonder who exactly the religous zealot is here. This is your third attempt to post these links, so this is my third response.

Forbes is a business magazine, who might understand economics, but I doubt that they know much about climate science. The author of the article, Warren Meyer, is a mechanical engineer who lives in Phoenix. He runs a business that is attempting to get Arizona to turn over public parks to him so he can privatize them for his own profit. On earlier threads you and others posted that David Suzuki was not qualified to be talking about climate change. If he, as a scientist, is unqualified then a mechanical engineer, who is not a scientist, is certainly not qualified.

So that leaves me with the same conclusion I used last time:

"Well, this is empirical evidence, written by the scientific community at NASA and peer reviewed by other scientists: http://www.nasa.gov/topics/earth/features/2011-temps.html

Once you can provide links to material written by the scientific community that has been peer reviewed by the scientific community that really does prove that climate change isn't happening, then you are deceiving yourself and potentially others."

The scary thing is, this (a significant number of scientists question the CO2-climate change connection) gets repeated all the time on TV and in the press without any (factual) challenge. Instead, we hear the deniers more than, well, every other scientist in the field.

My Liberal-voting, CBC-listening, Globe-reading, nature-loving, usually pretty well-informed mom doesn't like Smith or her party, but when climate change came up during those CBC debates, she said "Well, I hate to admit it, but she's right about that. Don't most scientists now think there's no connection to CO2, but we never hear that because of all the hoopla around David Suzuki and Al Gore?"

And she's never watched Fox or Sun News.

She can't put it up for debate because she knows nothing about it! She is not a scientist, and has not studied it. She is repeating what she is told to say by the Fraser Institute and her junior oil backers. Even Big Oil does not deny the fact of climate change. This woman has no business running for premier of Alberta.

"...Let’s begin with the preliminaries. The first is that global warming isn’t a scientific theory, it’s a scientific fact. The time for debate has ended. We can still argue over tipping points and the minutia — like when the arctic will become ice free during the summer months, or how much world sea levels will rise by 2050 — but the core truth is as solid as the rock of Gibraltar. Global warming is a scientific fact. We're just dotting the Is and crossing the Ts..."

Of course, many people, including Canada's Prime Minister and US Senator James Inahofe, have been bamboozled into believing that global warming is a hoax or a socialist money grab, ignoring the fact that conservative governments throughout the world are already vigorously fighting climate change.

And many others think that scientists are still engaging in a vigorous debate. With thousands of studies all pointing in the same direction, how is that possible?

I don't think she is fit to be a leader if she personally has to believe something in order for it to be a focus. Is she even capable of studying and understanding the weight of the science in order to personally be on board? Does she have to personally understand the evidence regarding her medications or does she take her doctor's and pharmacist's advice? The arrogance of discounting the weight of scientific evidence and saying she has a different point of view. Does she think the earth is flat? Because when she personally looks out on the horizon, she does not see a sphere. Albertans, pay attention. You are a bit different but surely many of you are educated enough to know that you don't know everything and neither does this arrogant woman. Get someone with common sense to lead your province.

And the evidence supporting climate change denial is....? Biblically derived beliefs? That would be religion not science. It seems to me that climate change is attacked by the Fundies but they offer nothing but 'statements" that it is not proven [yet or ever?]. All hypotheses are subjected to the same proofs using the scientific method, peer review and replication. Fundies like the results that the scientific method have given to all of us but they only want the stuff that they approve of according to their religious beliefs.
02:31 AM on 04/21/2012
The evidence supporting anthropocentric global warming is? Consensus, "Scientific consensus is the collective judgment, position, and opinion of the community of scientists in a particular field of study. Consensus implies general agreement, though not necessarily unanimity. Scientific consensus is not by itself a scientific argument, and it is not part of the scientific method. Nevertheless, consensus may be based on both scientific arguments and the scientific method." Wiki. And that is what many put their faith in to support a group if learned scientists who at the end of the 1970's told us with the same assurance as today, we are headed for the next ice age. The only real difference is some them are older now.

Yeah, that's "because I can't see it myself, it mustn't be true" evidence -- "If they're so smart, why aren't I living in an igloo? Answer that, scientists!"

"The evidence supporting anthropocentric global warming is? Consensus" That kind of challenges Smith's suggestion that there isn't consensus.

What I don't understand is why we're so resistant to look at alternatives to fossil fuels (apart from the fact that Alberta's entire economy depends on them). Eventually (yes, not in our lifetimes or likely even our grandchildren's) they'll be gone. And how can reducing emissions be a bad thing, unless the alternative is actually worse for the environment?
