A dog out with its owner on an evening walk north of Toronto has died after a man allegedly speared it with a broomstick on Friday.

The attack occurred at around 5:45 p.m. Friday on Pine Bough Manor near Bayview and 19th avenues in Richmond Hill.

A woman was walking the dog, a six-year-old Shetland sheepdog, when she was approached by a man, who then speared the dog with the broomstick, said York Regional Police Const. Rebecca Boyd.

The dog later died, she said.

Police have arrested and charged a 68-year-old man with injuring an animal. He will appear in court on May 25.

Police have yet to comment on a possible motive.
