Stick Figures Used To Explain Cuts To Federal Employees

Federal government employees whose jobs are affected by the implementation of this spring's budget cuts have received a stick-figure diagram to help them understand what they may be going through.

The one-page diagram, found in an information package CBC News has confirmed went out in several departments, uses stick people to help employees better understand the various stages of change.

The diagram varies across departments, but the overall message appears to be the same.

One diagram shows a stick figure packing a box, to depict a person leaving the job. Another shows a depressed figure with its head hanging down.

There's a happy stick person, but also another that's confused and in denial.

On each diagram, the last stick person standing resembles a marathon runner crossing a finish line, to illustrate acceptance and moving forward.

Public servants who did not want to be identified described the document as "condescending" and "insulting."

One person told CBC News that "civil servants know how to read and don't need stick figures" to explain what's happening.

The Conservatives have committed to cutting 19,200 jobs over three years as part of an overall plan to reduce federal spending and balance the books.

But it doesn't appear that the government spent money on the stick figures.

At the bottom of the page, in fine print, the diagram is described as "a free resource from www.businessballs.com."

My department didn't use stick figures, we got little houses to explain lay-off, and a fancy building to explain educational leave. Still insulting. If they spent more time explaining to employee what their options are it would change the "funeral like mood" we have been living since April 11. Most of the people that were "surplussed" in my department have over 15 years of service. Out with the old and competent and in with the young and incompetent! The Harper Way!

They had to put it in a way that they could understand. They haven't risen beyond the level of being able to communicate in any higher form than stick figures.

That didn't quite come out the way I meant. I meant to say that the people that put the diagram together are the ones who haven't learned to communicate at a higher level. Dooohhh!

I think the cons just don't understand that most people are smarter than they are.

This is an illustration of the future as the CPC sees it. Eventually they will succeed in dumbing down the population enough that stick figures will be necessary in all government communications.

So how does Harper keep getting re-elected? If people would stop voting PC these type of things would not be happening. We have only ourselves to blame.

Flaherty wrecked Ontario under Mike Harris. Now he's out to wreck the country. Talk about failing upward!

We should be sticking it to this Co-serve-a-republican government. They seem to think they were given the country, not just elected.

They understand that in order to fulfill their neo-conservative objective of destroying Canada's social safety net and turning it into some ugly version of "Mississippi North", they have to work quickly, before people wake up and figure out what they're doing. And by the time they get kicked out, the damage is done, and the cost to fix their destruction is measured in billions of dollars and decades of effort.

Where are all the other stick people involved? The home foreclosure folks. The debt collectors. The divorce lawyers, child services workers...
Have to look on the bright side folks. Look at the increased work for others.

It's the ReformCons format, they will privatise anything and everything push all taxes down to the middleclass and reduce taxes on Corporations even though not one study has shown this to actually benefit growth and tax return to the country. Then you reduce any type of Environmental Policies or Consumer protection and the Reformcons have the perfect mix to grow Corporate coffers which will be necessary to support the Conservatives for the next Election and if things don't go the right way these same companies will be indebted enough to ensure that nice jobs are provided on their various boards for their ex political partners.

it would be interesting to know if conservative voters are being fired by the government or is it possible that the tory party database is being used to determine who gets the ax.

seriously? could they think less of people? I feel sorry for these hard working Canadians trying to do good for the people. Now they treat them like this?
