Summum Magazine Funding Canada
Federal grants worth $190,000 for two Quebec magazines, Summum and Summum Girls, featuring scantily-clad models are under fire in the wake of broad arts cuts announced in the last Conservative budget.

Federal grants worth $190,000 for two Quebec magazines featuring scantily-clad models are under fire in the wake of broad arts cuts announced in the last Conservative budget.

Radio-Canada is reporting that Canadian Heritage approved the financing for Summum and Summum Girls, as part of the federal periodical fund earmarked for Canadian publications.

Summum features a selection of current affairs articles, but the Genex publication is best known for glossy pin-up photos of young Quebec women in various states of undress.

Summum Girl features pictures of young, muscular shirtless men.

Summum received $114, 478 this year, while Summum Girl was granted $77,241.

Quebec producer and director Yanick Létourneau said he's outraged the Genex magazines benefit from public subsidies.

"When we see private companies like Genex get financial support and it's for magazines like Summum and Summum Girl, we have to ask ourselves serious questions about what is going on in Canada in terms of cultural financing."

Summum's editor-in-chief Alain Rochette defended the grants and said the magazines are "easy targets" because they cater to a niche market in Quebec.

"We're doing something that not that many are doing here, and that's producing content that's glamour and sexy."

Rochette points out that other Canadian magazines such as Reader's Digest and TVA Publications enjoy larger grants than his publications.

The rules of applying for a grant with Heritage Canada are clearly outlined, and as this magazine is not considered pornographic in nature.

As a Publisher, and a tax payer, what concerns is not in fact the content of the magazines receiving grants (because depending where you stand one might be angered by lesbian / gays, or conversely, those magazines
containing religious content) - the Charter is clear as to the breadth of content allowable in our, thankfully, free country. Cosmo gets grants - how is this magazine any different? Oh - let me tell you how it's different - Cosmo has the greatest sell-through rate in the country, and it still gets a grant.

My greatest concern is that the two largest recipients of grants in this country are Rogers and Transcontinental. Rogers just released quarterly results - billions of dollars in profits. Why are we funding hugely profitable companies, when we should be providing grants to innovative start-ups? I have always felt that there should be a revenue ceiling on companies applying for grants. The magazines with the highest subscriber numbers (Chatelaine and Canadian Living), receive the highest grants - over one million each.

Rogers and Transcontinental are supported via their shareholders and earn incredible amounts of profit. Take grants away from them. Oh - and Thomson Reuters too. Yes - they also receive grants. That's far more shocking than Summun indeed.

Biased article, show me a "price list" of all cultural crap we the tax payers paid for, an you will find "cultural" even means "Lad Magazines".

So the question is should we fund this stuff an more importantly who's really getting the money, I bet you will find a lot of "friends" of politicians getting this money. Ultimately this type of BS is just creating an "elitist" class that gets more & more power at the expense of the rest of us peons. Gov must never be allowed to use our tax dollars for such ends. Society ITSELF will create it's on culture, it does not need big parasite government's "HELP".

In Iceland the countries oldest bank was SOLD to 'you guessed it" FRIENDS of the politicians who put it up for sale, an sold it dirt cheap to a bunch of SHADY businessmen, then the housing bubble burst. This is a prime example of Cronyism.

The Canadian culture sector should be protected, and Canadian magazines definitely count (even the dreaded NAFTA treaty allows for this). Better to send grants to the cultural sector than money to foreign arms manufacturers for things like jets we don't need
