Student Groups Quit Quebec Government Talks

Quebec Student Protest

Demonstrators and police clashed in downtown Montreal Wednesday after student group leaders abandoned talks with Quebec's education minister aimed at resolving an impasse over the government's proposed tuition hikes.

More than 10,000 students marched in the city's core after leaving Parc Emilie-Gamelin, where a demonstration began at 8:30 p.m. Police declared the protest illegal just before 10:30 p.m. and used stun grenades and chemical irritants to disperse the demonstrators.

According to the Montreal police Twitter account, protesters also set fire to a car at the corner of Stanley and Ste-Catherine streets.

Police said cars have been splashed with red paint during the demonstration, and protesters threw rocks at banks along their route, smashing windows at at least five banks.

CBC's Dan Halton reported that police charged the protesters with little or no warning in some cases.

Figures on the number of arrests and injuries were due to be released Thursday morning, police said.

Talks called off

The leaders of Quebec's CÉGEP and university student federations called off talks with the Liberal government, after it expelled the movement's most militant faction.

The FECQ and the FEUQ announced their decision to abandon the talks, just as negotiations were set to resume Wednesday with Education Minister Line Beauchamp.

That decision was sparked by Beauchamp's announcement that the student group CLASSE was being expelled from the discussion table. The minister blamed the group for a violent demonstration Tuesday night in Montreal.

During that demonstration, a bank window was smashed, a police officer was injured and three people were arrested.

Beauchamp said the demonstration happened despite a so-called "truce" with student leaders and called it “unacceptable."

She also accused CLASSE of using inflammatory language on its website to promote other demonstrations, including one scheduled for Wednesday night.

The president of Quebec's CÉGEP Federation, Léo Bureau-Blouin, said the breakdown in talks will not go over well with students.

"I think it's going to have negative consequences on the climate in Quebec. I think it's going to frustrate students hoping for solutions," he said.

Student leaders are denouncing violence, but are urging the education minister to "see beyond" a few violent acts, restart talks, and bring an end to the 10-week old conflict.

Burning cars, smashing windows, splashing red paint on random cars, throwing rocks, disguising your identity ... yep, that ought to do it. What's that old saying "you catch more flies with honey than vinegar"? Even if the tuition was increased 100% in 5 years it is still less than what Ontario tuition is right now!

Not a Quebecer, but I'm with the students. Yes they have the cheapest tuition fees in Canada, but they should fight to keep it that way. I only wish the students in my province did the same when I was in high school, except they didn't do anything and I ended up paying more than before.

Students should pay for school, but tuition fees are a joke. Paying that much money for writing essays and whatnot seems ludicrous. Yes, secondary schooling is important, but if it costs so much money that you need to take out a loan and keep paying it off as an adult. That's just wrong. Thankfully, I took the year off and worked so I don't have to worry about that, but many kids do.

I only wish that these protests make more students protest their ridiculous tuition fees and get them lowered. Not just in Quebec, but all of over Canada.

Sometimes it's better to get everyone in the same room. Excluding someone will only make it more difficult to control. At least if they are there they are talking now they will go back to throwing rocks and you can't be on every street.

Change comes when the people take to the streets, go students go!!!! For those who say that we have the lowest tuition fees and the most of everything bla bla bla....if the government decides to increase your income tax 75 per cent over the next 5 years....will you behave as you are expecting the students to? Will you take it lying down? I sincerely hope not!

Someone needs a history lesson. Quebec as a society decided long ago that higher education be accessible to ALL not only to those who live in the cities, live at home but to everyone who wanted it. Having an educated population benefits ALL. The government should not be taking from some of the poorest and those who cannot afford a 75 per cent increase.

Enough already. You FEUQ+FECQ+CLASSE kids act like worst kind of politicians. Press conferences, entourages, holding the city hostage, violence, destruction. And for what? "Maple Spring?" Pul-leeze. You are the laughing stock of the world. Such misery! The lowest tuition in Canada! Free CEGEPs! Bicycle paths up the wahoo! Bixis! Cheap rents! Free medical care! Tuition tax deductible! + if you get knocked up, 7 dollar a day day care! Montreal is a student paradise. If you kids had any brains you'd utilize every moment educating those brains in some of the finest schools in Canada because soon enough, if you play your cards right you will have a better paying job than your non-university pals + you will start paying taxes on taxes on taxes on taxes. A case in point. Our Montreal house which we bought for $140,000 when tuition was basically what it is now, costs us $325 every two WEEKS in municipal + school taxes! For what? So you kids can march around going boo-hoo? You are a joke!

FEUQ and FECQ have done the right thing. CLASSE needs to also be at the table and Beauchamp must know that she can't pick and choose who represents students. Bravo!

If these students were serious, they would be in class getting their money's worth.

If these students were ethical, they would not resort to violence and destruction, nor would they prevent those that disagree with them from attending classes.

In essense, they are stealing from those who wish to carry on with their education.

Real simple.

Announce that, beginning next year, all university tuition in the Province of Quebec will be absolutely free.

Then eliminate 80% of the seats, and base entrance for the remaining 20% solely on academic competition.

Three advantages:

1. The best and brightest get a crack at free university, no matter their financial situation.

2. A university education actually means something again, instead of being the equivalent of high school graduation 40 years ago.

3. None of this bunch of idiots will make the grade.

I had a good friend, an expert on Ancient History. He dropped out of school in Grade 10.

Everybody has a chance to learn something new.......the problem is that the universal possession of degrees so debases the academic credential that it harms society.....

Spoiled brats....hmm the single mother who scrimped and scrapedfor 4 years to buy a laptop because it is now necessary to have when attending university...doesn't feel very spoiled. Go out there and see who the students are...you would be surprised and hopefully open to changing some of your prejudiced opinion.
07:58 PM on 04/25/2012
I'm pretty sure the single mother wants to finish her semester and is not marching right now! She wants to finish school so she can earn money to feed her kids and hopefully have a better life.... And now she's going to be delayed at least a year because of this non-sense... Did you think about that?
