War Of 1812: Why Does No One Know Anything About It? (WATCH)

War Of 1812
Why so much confusion about the War Of 1812?

Quick history quiz. Who started the War Of 1812? Who fought in it? Who won?

If you're like many Canadians, chances are you don't know the answer to these questions. Even though the war played a pivotal role in the eventual creation of Canada and would shape the development of the United States.

Or as writer Stephen Marche explained in the Walrus, "For the US, the war confirmed its status as a sovereign state and tested the limits of manifest destiny. On this side of the border, the matter is much simpler: if we hadn’t won the War of 1812, we wouldn’t be Canadian."

The producers of 1812: Forged In Fire, an upcoming documentary about the conflict, took to Toronto's streets and asked people what they knew about the War of 1812. The answer, not a heck of a lot. It's a bit surprising considering one of the war's pivotal battles took place right here in Toronto (then called York) and nearly destroyed the fledgling city.

People do remember that story about British (Canadian?) troops burning down the White House (sorta).

Last year, College Humor also put together this hilarious video looking at the confusion surrounding the war. We don't recommend citing it in your history paper on the War Of 1812.

Canadians couldn't really care less ! The entire thing was a colossal waste of money and time.

We don't glorify war and death like Harper seems to want us to!

The US have always been WAR muggers ; we defeated them and the x British people in 1812. I wish they would stay back in the usa ; As we do not need the americas up here running our country. But if our glorious PM has it way he will sell Canada to the USA , just like the OIL

I believe Canada stopped the invasion of the US lead army at Niagara On The Lake and the St Catherines area Lundys lane wa famous Batle in which both sides took a beating . But after the Battle ( Brocks Monument is ) The Us lost there and never returned. They also fought in York Which is Toronto Now when I when to School , one of my teachers was the great grand son of a drummer boy who fought near Grenadier Pone( High Park ) . It was part of my History when I when to Puplic school ..in Toronto . Now all we hear about is the USA fighting war 2 ,,and all the Computer Games our all about killing ; What are they teaching the kids these days in School ''learning the words to O Canada , which was not around when I whento school and neither was the the LORDS Prayer.. thank the school board in those days.. I hope the film is made in Canada ..If it is made in the US it will show how US won..

For some reason, Canadians, even in the pre-country stage, are so polite that they forget their own great victories

America tried to conquer Canada and failed - no-one mentions it much because we aren't supposed to notice that America is ALWAYS trying to conquer Canada.
Ahem.

History is like a book. If it is well written by competent authors with imagination and energy, people will read and enjoy. If it is written by the dull and the dry, then it will be ignored. The presentation of our history has for the most part been written by the dull and the dry. There are notable exceptions but these authors are never allowed anywhere near the carriculum reading lists in any of our schools. Too bad, because they are a lot more interesting then the text books. Maybe the next 2 years will allow some exciting authors to spark an interest.

If Canada had not prevailed you would have been an American and way worse off than you are today. Canada was not the aggressor here we---our ancestors---were defending what we had for good reasons. Those who know nothing of or who ignore the past are destined to repeat the same mistakes.

As a history teacher this comes as no surprise to me. Our society has done precious little to create cultural stories from our history. It is not as flashy as the American version, but we have plenty of excitement in ours. When we consider how brave must have been the early pioneers, exploring lands they did not know, surrounded by people they did not understand, and knowing that most of them were considered the refuse of Europe. We rarely war, but when we do, we win. We have the largest nation on earth, yet a relatively tiny population, stretched out and maintaining a strong sense of what it is to be Canadian. We need to see movies, tv shows, pulp novels about Canadiana, so that they become part of our social fabric in a way that Jesse James, Wild Bill Hickock, and Wyatt Earp are in American society.

Make sure you watch the series and keep your eyes open for the companion graphic novel.

1812: Forged In Fire, an upcoming documentary - great, we need to be reminded of our past and the events that shaped our present.

why this sudden need to know what happened exactly 200 years ago?

It's what Cons like to teach and recall and fantasize about.
02:56 PM on 04/26/2012
The Cons are the Republicans, and need to drive them back south of the border. Figure out whose side you're on, budsky.

Cons haven't been the only one in power in the past two centuries.

Who other than history students is going to try and remember these things?
Do Americans know anything about the French-Indian War? That was the prelude to the War of Independence for various important reasons.

I would be willing to wager that most Canadians hold within their grasp as little or possibly less information about WWI, WWII or even the history of what happened between Montcalm and Wolfe and why, when, where and how.
