The B.C. government has introduced amendments to the School Act that will eliminate the standard school calendar, the government has announced.

The move allows school boards to more freely schedule classes, opening the way for the possibility of year-round schooling.

The Ministry of Education will continue to set a minimum number of instructional hours, starting in the 2013-2014 school year, a release Thursday said.

The amendments also extend the ability to take a mix of online and traditional school courses to students in kindergarten through Grade 9. Currently, only students in grades 10 to 12 have this option, the announcement said.

“These amendments to the School Act will provide school districts with additional tools to support personalized learning,” said Education Minister George Abbott.

I remember when Abbott was appointed minister that the teachers union had hope that he might understand their situation -- wow were they wrong! According to the Global TV coverage of the non-negotiations that went on for, what, 18 months? -- each side used its own calculations to project costs. Seems to me that the cost issue might have been put aside for a minute and they might have begun to talk about issues, reached some general agreements about conditions and then started hammering out the finances. Now, it seems that the province has announced this big new plan as a way of getting attention off of the mess they've made of negotiating with teachers. Well, BC may have been 'dumbed-down' over the years (as one university professor claims) but I hope we aren't dumb that we won't see through this ploy!

What he's really saying - We will save a bunch of money by going all year round and offering online courses and disguising it as additional tools to support personalized learning while bastardizing the education system even further!
