An RCMP officer was shot while on duty with a colleague in the Campbellton area Wednesday morning.
The officer is recovering in hospital. His life is not considered in danger, according to the police.
About 10 members of the Sûreté du Québec have been called in to investigate at the request of the RCMP.
Sgt. Ann Mathieu, of the Sûreté du Québec, said there was an "event" involving two police officers in Flatlands, 20 kilometres west of Campbellton.
"In that event one of the police officers has been injured by a [gun]," she said.
Mathieu declined to comment on how the officer came to be shot.
"Well, we have an idea of what the police officers were doing at that moment, but we're not going to answer that question actually."
Investigators want to talk to witnesses first, she said.
Mathieu did, however, confirm that no one other than the two officers were involved.
She called the case an isolated incident.
Members of the Sûreté du Québec are interviewing people in the community, said Mathieu.
“The investigation is starting and by the different people we are going to meet, the different witnesses, the circumstances will become clearer in the further hours and days," she said.
RCMP officials have declined to comment, saying the matter is in the hands of the Sûreté du Québec.
