Conrad Black Slated For Release From Prison This Week

CBC  |  Posted: 04/29/2012 3:49 pm Updated: 04/29/2012 3:49 pm

Fallen Canadian-born media tycoon Conrad Black is scheduled to be released from a U.S. prison by next weekend, according to corrections officials.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons online inmate locator lists Black's release date from Miami's Federal Correction Institution as next Saturday.

Bureau spokeswoman Tracy Billingsley told CBC News the date is only a "projected estimate" of a release date but is "generally accurate.'" But she added Black could be free as early as Friday.

"When a release date falls on a weekend, we can release them on the Friday prior to that weekend," Billingsley said Sunday.

Black, 67, was resentenced last June to 42 months in prison on fraud and obstruction of justice charges.

Black had already served 29 months in the Coleman federal prison in Florida before the U.S. Supreme Court struck down some of his initial convictions, citing a misuse of the "honest services" provision of the U.S. fraud statute. His original sentence was for 78 months in prison after multiple convictions on fraud and obstruction of justice charges.

The court agreed to accept the 29 months he had already served as part of his new sentence of 42 months.

In an interview with Matt Galloway of CBC Toronto Radio's Metro Morning last August, Black talked about the possibility of eventually getting back the Canadian citizenship he renounced in 2001 to take a seat in the U.K.'s House of Lords.

He said he wants to return to Toronto, because that's where his wife, journalist Barbara Amiel, lives, but he won’t try to get his Canadian citizenship right away.

He owns a home in Toronto, but Canadian officials aren't disclosing whether they will allow him back into the country.

If someone from the U.S. with a DUI conviction isn't allowed to visit Canada, this rejectionist poseur should not be allowed into Canada either.

Citizenship isn't something you change like new clothes. Black made is decisions and now he has to live with the consequences. We ought not let non-citizens with criminal records come and go as they please in Canada.

I assume the US would want to deport him as he is a convicted felon and an alien. So the question rises, where will Connie go? Since he is a citizen of the UK [having given up his Canadian citizenship in return for his peerage in the UK] that would be a lawful and logical place for him to go. But he is not exactly welcomed there by his old group of pals. However, do not be surprised if he makes a legal claim to his lapsed Canadian citizenship on the grounds that he is still a member of the Privy Council. Just think Canada, he can be yours again if Harper gives his conservative buddy a break.

I sure hope they don't let him in. We don't want his kind around here. It's bad enough I have to read his tripe on the Huffpost. On the flipside, I get to comment directly to Convict Black.

He and Harper are very much alike! Neither have a conscience or will admit any wrong doing! They are both narcissistic and will do whatever it takes to get what they want! They have no empathy and show disdain for those who don't agree with them! Both are dangerous!
Anyone who disagrees with them are labled as radicals! They can also be charming if nesessary and is how people get fooled! It fits a certain profile!

Smart guy. If we arrange people coming into Canada with a criminal history (and there are many) based on likeliness to contribute to our country, he will move to the front of the line.

Really? Because if I remember correctly he left and dropped his citizenship so he could become a Lord in the British parliament.
Criminality and economic contribution are meaningless without loyalty, and any oath he gives to regain his citizenship would be a lie.

Why would you expect someone convicted of Fraud to benefit our society? The greatest benefit he ever gave to Canada was to move to the USA.

Do we normally give citizenship to convicted felons? But, I am pretty certain that he will be able to buy forgiveness.

he is not a Canadian Citizen. He should not be allowed into Canada. We do not allow people with an impared driving conviction into Canada so why should someone with charges against him like he had be allowed in. Tell him to take a hike.

Where else to go to express my outrage at CBC? Here's the headline story it just put up: Canadian killer to plead for life in Montana. And other posts CBC refuses to put up. The Harper-controlled CBC is into censorship big time!!

Mr. Harper has broken with maybe 50 years of Canadian tradition in bringing citizens home to serve their sentences in Canada. Harper wants to pick and choose. This is despicable. This man may be put to death because of Harper. Despicable.

Reposting again and again: The Swiss government? Which has protected brutal dictators and anyone else with millions and billions to hide for centuries, is all of a sudden getting huffy over a Gadhafi business crony? That's rich.

I think the Swiss have gotten personal. Very much to their discredit.

Reposting a 6th time. Conrad Black was convicted on relative trivia, much like Al Capone. Black has unquestioned intelligence and business "savvy;" his morals and biases are what put people off.

He lived like a modern-day king. But I look on him as one of the main destroyers of a free press in Canada. The newspaper acquisition/merger king that gave us just a few dominant media companies owning everything. With a pro-business/anti-government, pro Israel/war and anti-environment/labour/women/immigration bent. Hate those terrorists/criminals, too. 49 of the top 50 newspapers in this country endorsed Mr. Stephen Harper just one year ago. That's how low they have sunk.

I was of two minds about Smith and his appealing his death sentene in Montana. But, since he helped murder two men as a thrill I cannot see why Montana shouldn't be where his fate is decided. And being high on drugs is no longer a excuse in my eyes for committing cold-blooded murder.

Conrad Black stole from people who trusted him. "Relative trivia" was what he was jailed for? Tell that to those whom he destroyed.

Switzerland? In a world of its own. You know what they're like and have been like for a long, long time, so why complain about it now?

The papers in cahoots with Harper? Perhaps. Well, they did just as well in predicting and embracing a Wildrose victory in Alberta.

No wonder he wanted to be able to sue people for libel. Most likely this is a ploy he'll use to silence anyone who reminds people that he's a criminal.

He renounced his Canadian citizenship to become a Baron. He has lost his lordship and Order of Canada for "infamous acts." Let him rot - he is not worthy of Canadian or British citizenship, nor is his power-shopping wife.
10:27 PM on 04/29/2012
I am sure he has loads of money stashed in offshore accounts and money talks. So yes, he will buy his way to a come back and hire a PR firm to smooth over his image & re-write facts/history. Plus I am sure he has dirt on some wealthy and powerful people who owe him some favours that can "ease" his way back into the "upper crust society" and clean the image.
