UPDATE FROM THE CANADIAN PRESS:

A man who piloted the hang glider from which a Vancouver woman fell to her death has been charged with obstructing justice over allegations he withheld evidence in her death.

RCMP Cpl. Tammy Hollingsworth says 50-year-old William Orders is accused of withholding potential evidence that could help determine whether he played a role in any wrongdoing.

Orders told witnesses after Saturday's incident that he tried desperately to hold on to the woman shortly after the hang glider set off over the Fraser Valley.

Hollingsworth says Orders is being held in custody until he faces the charge in court on May 2.

VANCOUVER - It was an anniversary gift from her boyfriend — a gliding experience over B.C.'s Fraser Valley that he was videotaping, until he watched in horror as the young woman slipped from the pilot's grip and plunged 300 metres (about 1,000 feet) to her death.

The hang glider's pilot tried desperately to hold on to Lenami Godinez, said Jason Warner, a hang gliding safety expert who arrived at the top of Mount Woodside and spoke with the pilot just minutes after the accident on Saturday.

"He felt there was something wrong within seconds from launch," Warner said in an interview Sunday.

"He tried to grab her, he tried to grab her harness, everything he could, wrapped his legs around her and she slipped down his legs and then fell."

Warner, the safety director for the Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association of Canada, also spoke with the her boyfriend who told him he organized the experience for Godinez as an anniversary gift.

"The worst thing possible has happened. Everybody is in shock, the (gliding) community is in shock," Warner said.

He said the man was videotaping the experience, but stopped recording just before she fell.

RCMP Sgt. Mark Pelz said he spoke with several witnesses after the incident.

"The boyfriend was next to go. All you can say is 'Oh my God,'" he said.

The 27-year-old woman, who had no experience in hang gliding, was riding beside the pilot.

Godinez was apparently an immigrant from Mexico and had been in Canada for several years.

Mount Woodside is a popular spot for gliders and considered one of the safest sites in the Fraser Valley to launch from for winds and for distances, said Warner.

He said this is the first time this type of accident has happened in Canada, although there have been similar accidents around the world.

Because the area below the jump-off point was heavily forested, Pelz said it took dozens of searchers about eight hours to find the woman's body.

"The area of the search was massive," he said.

Witnesses said the woman fell about 30 seconds after the launch.

The investigation is in the early stages, and RCMP couldn't say if pilot error or equipment failure were to blame.

The fall appears to be nothing more than a horrible tragedy, but police will keep an open mind as they investigate what happened, Pelz said.

"We have the hang glider, we've got all of the hardware that goes with it, we'll find an expert that will tell us what needs to happen if any of the equipment failed," Pelz said.

The BC Coroners Service will also take part in the investigation.

Coroner Barb McClintock said it's her understanding there are many fail-safe mechanisms on such gliders.

"Obviously we'll be looking at things like what were the mechanisms in place, were they being done correctly, were there enough mechanisms, did we have some sort of horrible perfect storm when they could all go wrong at the same time," she said.

Warner said his group will also be investigating.

"We'll determine whether it was pilot error of equipment failure," he said. "If it was pilot error, we'll be re-examining his certification."

While there are already many safety standards in place for hang gliding in Canada, Warner said they're asking all pilots and instructors to double check equipment, especially if they're doing a tandem ride.

The "anti dive" feature of the hang glider pulled the glider out of the dive, making the accident less serious than it would have been otherwise.

The fear the woman must have experienced as this was happening ): and to the boyfriend who will have to live with this tragedy. Condolences to both.

I suspect pilot error where the woman wasn't strapped in correctly if at all. The only other explanation is the woman completely panicked and disengaged herself from the harness (highly unlikely)

Either we aren't being told the whole story, or the RCMP are being stupid again. You can't charge someone for obstructing justice if there's no evidence of a crime. A 'tragic accident' is not a crime.

If you don't cooperate with a police investigation you can be charged, and that is apparently the case in this instance. No one knows it's not a crime until it has been investigated.

When "failing to cooperate" means that you are trying to protect your own rights, then the police behaviour amounts to high-handed conduct and even misconduct.

Not sure I buy the "apparently the case" business. Canadian cops have a tendency to view anything less than absolute obediency to their perceived (i.e. not real) authority as criminal conduct and they have a federal government that facilitates them. If you didn't watch the events at the G20 unfold, then you are not witnessing the erosion of your rights.

For all these reasons, there is no basis for giving the RCs the benefit of the doubt on this, especially considering that it's a tragic accident. Vigilance on civil rights is called for.

You're correct that this is a tragic accident. But the victim paid a professional for the flight, and the professional had an obligation to do everything he could to ensure her safety. If he forgot to check her straps, it may be an accident, but it's still negligence and that makes it a crime.

He's hiding evidence to prevent the police from determining what happened. That's great for saving his own ***, but denies the family and the public the chance to know what really happened.

Very, very bad taste.

listen "agness", I only wrote the preceeding bad taste comment because I was SICK of the humour found in the recent story in China where a woman squeezed a mans testicles to the point he died. I read on THIS site countless numbers of jokes about how he died, thinking to myself : "if it had been a female dying at a mans' hands, there would be no humour in it" ! So I post my comment, and YOU prove my point. Thank-you. Why is it only funny when a MALE meets an untimely end ? The silence is deafening !!!

Nice refudiation of my point ! NOBODY who has criticized my comments has had the jam (or the intelligence?) to counter what I've said re: male vs. female humour when it comes to tragedy. Again, the silence speaks volumes. Its okay only to joke about MALE misfortune ? Ummmmmmm.........................NO !

What a tragic story. I am left to wonder when the pilot stated he knew something was wrong right away why the flight was not aborted immediately.

Hang gliders launch by jumping off a ledge on a mountainside, usually a minimum of 1000 ft above the ground, sometimes much more. Gliders cannot ascend predictably enough to a landing side, so the only option would have been to make an accelerated landing into the valley. However, things happened way too fast for the pilot to take any corrective action. It was doomed from the start, it seems.

Sounds like someone got complacent and did not double check her harness or to make sure she was secure. It is easy for these pilots (and people in other dangerous occupations) to get lazy when you do something everyday and think that since you have never had an accident one won't happen. That is when you skip a step or two, and usually that is when there is an accident. You should always double and triple check the glider and harnesses. I cannot imagine her horror of falling from the glider and knowing she was going to die within a few moments.

When I read the story, they were still searching for the poor girl. Trees as the ones she may have fallen into, are quite tall and should have enough height in which could in a sense slow her in a way she could survive the fall. Growing up, my friend had 75-90 ft. pines bordering his property. We would climb as close to the top as we could. One time my friend was as near to the top as we dared. I heard the branch snap and down he went. All I heard was wo, wo, wo, wo. I yelled down and he said "do it man, just do it". Off I was, and what a ride. So, I guess that I was hoping the same for her. I guess not.

"He said the man was videotaping the experience, but stopped recording just before she fell." Okay, humor me a second on this. In this day and age I find writers are usually veeeeerrrryyy careful about facts & details. I guess we could speculate about life insurance the rest of the day, but it seems that line should have read, "...stopped recording just before she (hit the ground)???
