Montreal Hit And Run Video
A 23-year-old man was hospitalized after a cab struck him on Montreal's on St. Laurent Blvd. early Sunday morning, the Montreal Gazette reported. (YouTube)

MONTREAL - Four charges have been laid against a Montreal cabbie allegedly involved in an incident seen in gruesome videos circulating on the Internet.

Guercy Edmond appeared in court where he was charged with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, hit-and-run and dangerous driving.

The 47-year-old taxi driver will remain in prison until his bail hearing on Wednesday.

NOTE: Another video taken from a different angle can be seen here. It is graphic. Viewer discretion is advised.

Videos posted on the Internet show a taxi driver involved in a late-night weekend dispute with several people — and then show the cabbie's vehicle running over one of the pedestrians.

The 23-year-old pedestrian is in hospital with serious — but not life-threatening — injuries.

Friends and family came to the courthouse in Montreal to show their support for Edmond during his brief appearance today.

One video posted to YouTube shows the conflict escalating, with a group of men kicking at a car and one man jumping on its roof. Moments later, the vehicle drives right over one of the men. The car then darts away, down the street.

"I told you guys to get out of there!" a man is heard in the video, yelling at the pedestrians involved in the altercation.

"Anyway, it's all on tape!"

Be obscure clearly.

Hopefully, there are additional charges against those that were blocking the cabbie. The cabbie should have driven away before it got out of control, but the pedestrians clearly blocked his way and it was turning into a mob-like situation.

I fail to see what the cabbie did wrong.

All parties are wrong in this case. The idiots kicking, surrounding, and jump on the car are at fault. The cabbie, as much as I sympathize with him, is also at fault. Once he ran over the guy, he should not have sped off. He should have called the police. I totally understand his situation, and I think he panicked once he ran over the guy, so he sped off.
The idiot that got ran over deserved it. But the cabbie also didn't handle the situation as best he could. He should have called the police right from the get go, then this whole situation wouldn't have happened.
You fail to see what he did wrong; he broke the law. You can't speed off if you run someone over. It's called hit and run.

Had the driver not sped off, he would have been torn to pieces.

What the cab driver did in my view is what's REALLY called "Standing your Ground."

The person who got run over deserved it. He and his friends were terrorizing the taxi driver I would guess.

Darwinism at work. Unfortunate the injuries aren't life threatening.

This looks like a different Montreal from where I went to school and spent 8 years. Unbelievable.

Elect this cabbie to public office. He did more to clean up Montreal than the present corrupt mayor.

The cabbie should sue the guy he ran over for excess wear and tear on his tires.

Well, we'll see about that. He will have his day in court.

I hope that the graphic video on the national news doesn't prejudice a jury in his case. I do suspect that a lot of people wondered about self-defense when they first viewed the video. I know my initial reaction was that the event was horrific, but I still got the sense that the cabbie wasn't just taking out aggression -- and that was the original tape CTV showed without the context of pedestrians banging on his window, kicking the doors and jumping on the cab.

He will lose. All because when he had the chance to leave he didn't. That is what will hurt him.

Too many people treat cabbies as "low life’s" projecting a "I am better than you" attitude, being insulting and abusive to the “cabby”. Many people assume that anyone driving a taxi has no education, is stupid and knows nothing about business. Most times the driver swallows his “pride” and says nothing. It is all part of the “job”. But it grates on the soul.

To set this “low life” thing straight. In the community where I live, Taxi Owner have in excess of $250,000 invested. Taxis are owner-operators who have a Taxi Drivers Licence. this requires a criminal background check and drivers licence check. These are businessmen running very complex businesses who must meet a much higher standard of behaviour than most other people are held to.

These “low lifes” are the people who pick up the special needs students for the school boards and they are vetted by all concerned (Regional Bylaw, Police and the Board of Directors of their Taxi company) against this standard.

Part time (non-owner) drivers are held to the same standards as are owners. My guess would be that the same level of standards apply in Montreal.

Sometimes the lack of respect finally get to be too much and a cabby will give it back...almost always with words.

When the breakdown in respect results in a physical confrontation, anger, fear and panic always result in a bad outcome.

That and more. Say you attempt to murder someone, if they get you instead in self-defense, they go to jail and you are a victim.

If I had to drive human beings around all day I would have "snapped" too. I am on the cabbies side on this one. Just watching the video I can totally understand why he did what he did. The way these losers were taunting him when he is simply doing his job trying to put food on the table for his family. The human race is getting worse and it's a good job it wasn't me because I think I would have run over a couple more.
